Life Story / Obituary
GAASTRA – Mr. George Gaastra, aged 92, of Grand Rapids, went to be with his Lord on December 7, 2016. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Otto, Ted, and John Gaastra; and brothers-in-law, Carl Compagner and Joe Davidoski. George is survived by his wife of 66 years, Dorothy; children, Greg (Stephenie) Gaastra and Betsy (Randy) Groendyk; grandchildren, Tyler (Marylynn) Gaastra, Tricia (Brett) VanderHaar, David (Anaite) Groendyk, Sara Groendyk, Logan Gaastra, Kristin Groendyk, and Lily Gaastra. Also surviving are sister, Winifred “Wynn” Compagner; sister-in-law, Arlene Davidoski; and many nieces and nephews. George‘s passion was meeting with family and friends, and he was quick to share a smile and a joke with everyone. He served 3 years in the U.S. Army during WWII in the South Pacific. The Funeral Service will be held at 1 PM Monday, December 12, 2016 at Seventh Reformed Church, 950 Leonard St. NW. Friends may visit with the family from 2-5 PM on Sunday at Heritage Life Story Funeral Home (Van't Hof Chapel), 851 Leonard St. NW and for one hour prior to the service at church. Interment in Washington Park Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Christian Rest Home Foundation or Seventh Reformed Church Radio Ministry.
