Fredrick Drobney, age 72, of Brighton, MI passed away Friday, August 19, 2016 at his home in Brighton, MI. He was born on December 4, 1943 and raised by his mother in Waco, TX. Loving husband of Mary (Stasik) Dobney. Beloved father of Matt (Carrie), Eric (Heather); step-father of Elizabeth and Emily Wenson; grandfather of Kevin, Darin, Emma, Mason, Ellie, Vera, Milo, Audrey, and Cole. He was preceded in death by his mother Flossie Schofner. Fred was known for his intelligence, wit, humor, and his loving and easy going spirit. He was an avid reader and sports enthusiast. After receiving his Ph.D from Rice University in 1968 he became a Professor of American History at St. Louis University. He then devoted his professional time and talents as a university administrator as Dean of City College at Loyola University, New Orleans; Vice Provost at Washington State University; Provost and Executive Vice President at Michigan Technological University; Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs at Western Michigan University. In 2002, he returned to the classroom as Professor of American History at Western Michigan University. Fred's wisdom and kindness improved the lives of many who had the honor of knowing him. Fred will be deeply missed especially by his loving family and friends. Funeral services Saturday, August 27, 2016 at 10:30 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 711 Rickett Rd., Brighton, MI 48116. Visitation will be at the church at 9:30 until time of service.
