Frederick M. Nightingale, age 91, of Portage, MI died on October 6, 2015. Born in Lansing, Michigan to Herman Nightingale and Martha (Steinkraus). Fred grew up in Gladwin, MI, then moved back to Lansing his Senior year of High School. He graduated Cum Laude from CMU in Mt. Pleasant, MI majoring in Education. Fred was a WWII veteran, serving in the Navy from 1943 - 1946 serving most of that time at Navy Pier, Chicago, IL and Glenview Naval Air Station. Fred worked for the Michigan Department of Transportation as a Engineer Technician in Highway Design for 30 years, retiring in 1984. In 1947 he married Marjorie Bottom. They lived in Cadillac until 1963 when Fred took a job transfer to the Portage MDOT office. They had four children who survive, D'Anne Nightingale (H. Richard Brown), Lynette Bailey (Keith), Cheryl Jordan (Richard) and Mark Nightingale (Kathy). Fred has 5 Grandchildren, Evan Jordan, Hilary Adams(Anthony), Jordan Nightingale (Keri), Derek Nightingale and Leah Nightingale (fiance' Michael Stickels), and 3 Great grandchildren, Dresden Adams, Rowan Adams and Corbin Nightingale. Fred lived for the past 3 years at Bickford Cottage in Portage, MI. His very special caregivers Janna and Jamee and many others were a blessing to his life. Fred was active in church his entire life. He also taught 1st aid to Boy Scouts, also teaching 1st aid and CPR for the MDOT for several seasons. He loved the out of doors, hunting, fishing and bird watching. Golf was a particular passion for many years. After retirement he designed and built his home on Stoneledge Lake in Cadillac. He volunteered for the Carl T Johnson Hunting and Fishing center, helping to build displays and the boardwalk trail. His love of wood working kept him busy making many projects for himself, friends and family. Fred invented a word game called Scramble of which he was very proud making several hundred of the games by hand. Cremation has taken place. A private graveside service with military honors will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery. Memorials can be made to Bickford of Portage, the Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center, Cadillac, MI or Temple Hill Baptist Church, Cadillac, MI. Arrangements by Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel.
