Life Story / Obituary

Florence, "Pinkie", Hoffmann, 79, passed away on September 8, 2018 at home, surrounded by family, after a 4-month battle with cancer. Pinkie was a kind, generous, loving, supportive, energetic, and independent woman. She was dedicated to her family, valued her friendships, and used her creative talents and energy to volunteer for many community-based organizations. She believed strongly in "service to others before self". She especially enjoyed offering an extra hand to those who seemed to need a little extra support. She had bright blue eyes, a wonderful smile, a great sense of humor, and a strong desire to learn about the natural world.

Pinkie was born on Oct.18, 1938, in Grand Rapids, Mi. to Margaret Reily and Ransom Perkins. She graduated from Grand Rapids Central High School and Michigan State University. She married husband, John, in March 1960 when both were students at MSU. They were married by the Reverend Dr. Duncan Littlefair of Fountain Street Church in Grand Rapids.

Pinkie is survived by her six children: John P. Hoffmann, Mark H. Hoffmann (Michelle), Karen L. Masters (Alan), Terri H. Kachadurian (Brian), Lisa E. Mason, and Heidi Flores (Joe). She is survived by thirteen grandchildren: Maile and Jessica Hoffmann, Aaron (Kate) and Shane Hoffmann, Adrian (Altina) and Cameron Masters, Maia and Allison Knox, Brandon and Andre Mason, and Olivia, Francie, and Ava Flores. She also leaves behind two great-grandchildren, Mack and Maylie Hoffmann; her brother, William Perkins (Karen), brother-in-law Donald Hoffmann (Mimi), and numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces. Extended family and special friends include: Lara Schmit, Suzi Nomiyama, Chris Lubbers, Van Knox, Chris Kmiecik, Alex Kott, Danielle Haydell, Phil Laird, ‘Willie’ Donker-Perkins, Bonnie Mathias, Barb Gibson, Marge Rundell, Denni Hunting, Diane Hubert, Kathy Verstraete, and Linda Barry. She will be missed sorely by all those who knew her.

After moving to Traverse City in 1974 with her family, Pinkie quickly started volunteering for community-based organizations, including the Third Level Crisis Center and Grand Traverse Probate Court. She avidly supported the Old Town Playhouse, for which she created hundreds of costumes. She became the costumer of note at the OTP. She especially enjoyed collaborating with the Young Peoples Program as a mentor and teacher (the kids loved her). Pinkie was a long-time concession volunteer at the State Theatre for the children's Saturday matinee movie, and she worked at the Traverse City Film Festival from its inception. Pinkie was a long-time member at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Grand Traverse (UUCGT). She and her husband earned the Gamble Award for outstanding service to the Congregation. She was especially active in the Tuesday Lunch, which serves those in need.

In addition to raising a family and volunteering, Pinkie found time to be employed. She loved her job at the Summer Music Camp at Interlochen Arts Academy, eventually becoming a full-time costumer for the Dance and Theatre Department. She retired in 2000 so that she could travel more.

Pinkie loved traveling and exploration. She traveled to Costa Rica and other Central American countries with daughter Karen, and to Paris, France with son John and his family. She and husband John travelled annually to the Southwest and visited the West Coast and Hawaii several times. They visited family and friends in the New England states and Newfoundland. The beaches of Florida were always appealing at Spring break time. Pinkie looked forward to her many day trips and adventures with good friend Bonnie Mathias.

She had a special relationship with her grandchildren. She was a role model for the girls and a supportive friend to the boys. They admired her tenacity, positive attitude, and willingness to be actively engaged in their life events. They knew she was "something special".

A Memorial Service is scheduled for 1 pm at the UUCGT, 6726 Center Rd. Oct.27, 2018. The family will be available to meet guests at 12 o’clock noon. A reception will immediately follow. To honor Pinkie's life, the family suggests that donations be made to Father Fred Foundation (https://www.fatherfred.org/contact; info@fatherfred.org), The Grand Traverse Land Conservancy (https://www.gtrlc.org/contact-us/; info@gtrlc.org), or the scholarship fund at the Old Town Playhouse Young People's program (https://mynorthtickets.com/organizations/34/donate; (231) 947-2210).
