88, of Paw Paw, peacefully went into the loving arms of Kathleen Saturday, January 12, 2019 at Maple Lake Assisted Living. He was born May 12, 1930 in Chicago, the son of the late Joseph James and Dorothy (Klazura) Mitchell. Gene served his country in the Air Force during the Korean War, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 3798 4th degree, and a member of the American Legion McGowan - Johnson Post 68 in Paw Paw. Gene operated the Gene Mitchell Tavern in Paw Paw, which was in the family for more than 60 years. While running the tavern, Gene would play his accordion at times to entertain the guests. He enjoyed racing his horses and he was avid supporter of the sporting events in Paw Paw. Gene loved trips to the casino and traveling to see many of his son, Jerry's shows. He was very generous with everyone and cherished time spent with his family and his grandchildren. On June 28, 1952, in Paw Paw, Gene married Kathleen Misuraca who preceded him in death November 22, 2010. He is survived by his three sons, Gary (Carol Hatfield) Mitchell of Paw Paw, Rick (Sherrie) Mitchell of Paw Paw, Jerry Mitchell of New York, New York; Six Grandchildren, Kristen Mitchell, Kraig (Janae) Mitchell, Andrew (Holly) Mitchell, Derrick (Heather) Mitchell, Madison Mitchell and Grace Mitchell; nine great grandchildren, two sisters, Jay-Jay Germaine and Sandy Wallace, along with many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Wednesday, January 16, 2019 beginning at 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Adams Funeral Home, Paw Paw. A rosary service will commence at 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will follow on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Mary Catholic Church, Paw Paw with Rev. Fr. Joseph Xavier and Rev. Fr. Robert F. Creagan officiating. Burial will conclude at Saint Mary Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Paw Paw High School Athletics in lieu of flowers.
