Emmett J. "Speedy" Hawley, 93, of Augusta, Michigan died 11:30 a.m. on Monday, May 22, 2017, after suffering a heart attack about 9:00 a.m. Therefore he had the pleasure of spending the last night of his life at home. He was born July 15, 1923 in Kalamazoo, Michigan the son of Emmett and Florence (Egan) Hawley. Emmett was a lifelong area resident and honorably served his country during WWII in the U.S. Army. He retired as a printer for James River Corporation in 1980, after more than 30 years. After retiring, he worked part-time as a driver for Weller Auto Parts. In 1961, Emmett married Doris Jean Wood. Sadly he was preceded in death by his wife, Jean in, 1977. Surviving are a stepdaughter, Karen Curry; step grandchildren, Debbie and Jimmy Curry; his cherished dog, Duke; and several nieces and nephews and their families. In addition to his wife, Emmett was also preceded in death by a stepson, Dennis; sisters, Marie Rathburn, Mary Hedges, Betty Bedecs; and brothers, Harry, Raymond and Ernest Hawley. Emmett was a member of Delton Seventh Day Adventist Church. He was very sociable and enjoyed dining at the Parkview Cafe, Kentucky Fried Chicken and McDonald's. Friends will be received 5:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 1, 2017 at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care Richland Chapel, 9170 East D Ave., Richland, MI. Memorial services will be held at the funeral home 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 2, 2017. A luncheon will follow at Richland Community Center, 9400 East CD Ave., Richland, MI 49083. Emmett will be buried next to his wife at Hicks Cemetery in Pennfield Township. Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of South Central Michigan, 2500 Watkins, Rd., Battle Creek, MI 49015.
