Elizabeth “Betty” C. Smerchek, age 91, passed away Monday, March 06, 2017 at Froedtert Memorial Hospital, Wauwatosa. She was born in South Milwaukee, December 14, 1925, daughter of the late Frank and Theresia (Nee: Janosch) Deutsch.

On August 18, 1945 she was united in marriage to Richard V. Smerchek who preceded her in death, May 3, 1987. Betty was employed with the Racine Unified School District for many years at Crestview and Olympia Brown Elementary Schools, retiring in 1987. She was a lifelong and active member of St. Rita Catholic Church and belonged to the Christian Mothers and the Third Order of St. Augustine. Betty enjoyed being a member of a Quilters Club and also made numerous afghans for Toys for Tots. Above all she was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who cherished time with her family.

She will be dearly missed by her children, Kenneth (Sherry) Smerchek, Mary Ann (Dennis) Collins; her grandchildren, Kari Heister, Jennifer Smerchek, Robyn (Paul Jr.) Woodward, Joseph (Jessica) Collins; her great-granddaughter, Ava Elise Collins; very special friend, Debbie Ulinski; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by her daughter, Janet Heister-Bok and great-grandson, Paul Woodward III.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, March 11, 2017, 10:30 A.M. at St. Rita Catholic Church, 4339 Douglas Avenue. Entombment will follow at Holy Cross Garden Mausoleum, Hwy 32. Relatives and friends may meet with the family Friday at the funeral home from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. and Saturday at the church from 10:00 A.M. until time of Mass at 10:30 A.M. Memorials to St. Rita Catholic Church or to the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin have been suggested.

Betty’s family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff at Froedtert Memorial Hospital and Horizon Hospice for their loving and compassionate care.
