Life Story / Obituary

Print

John I. B. Larned, age 64, passed into the presence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Ash Wednesday, February 14, 2018.

He loved the Lord, he loved his family, and he loved people. He called everyone “friend,” and he meant it. John was always praying for and with people, and lived to tell them about his Lord.

He was born on May 29, 1953 in Evanston, Illinois to John I. B. Larned II and Joan (Nichols) Larned.

He was a hands-on kind of guy. He had a way with wood – whether building strip-plank cedar canoes from scratch, furniture from reclaimed barn wood, entire additions to his own home or houses for the birds.

He played a mean game of racket ball.

As a child he was Dennis-the-Menace kind of trouble. For a few years his family attended a church temporarily housed in a school gymnasium, and his favorite activity was rolling himself up in the curtain that separated the Sunday school from the sanctuary -- during the sermon.

He grew up with a learning disability, when learning disabilities were not understood, and managed to overcome dyslexia, graduate from chiropractic school and learn to use his hands to make people feel better.

John is survived by Susan, his wife of thirty six years, his daughters Emilie, Grace and Esther, his sons John and Matthew, and the many people who loved him. His warm smile and hugs will be greatly missed.

A celebration of John’s life will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 2, 2018 at the First Congregational Church of Traverse City. Pastor Chad Oyer and Dr. Gary Hogue will officiate.

Memorial contributions made in John’s name may be directed to the First Congregational Church of Traverse City, 6105 Center Rd., Traverse City MI 49686. Please visit www.lifestorytc.com to sign the guestbook and share your thoughts and memories with his family.
