Campbell, Dr. Hugh 9/24/2015 Holland Dr. Hugh Campbell, of Holland, Michigan passed away Thursday, September 24, 2015. Hugh was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan a son of James and Lillian Campbell. After graduating from Kalamazoo Central High School, Hugh attended Hope College and graduated with a Biology and Chemistry degree in 1951. Following his graduation from Hope College, Hugh attended Michigan State University and the Illinois College of Optometry. In 1955, Hugh married Jeanette (Nettie) Kruiswyk who preceded him in death. He began his optometry practice while serving in the army in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Following his discharge from the army in 1957, Hugh practiced optometry in Portage, Michigan where his daughter JoLynn was born. Hugh retired in 2005 and moved to Holland, Michigan. In 2007 he married Marylou Merrick. During his retirement years, Hugh enjoyed serving others through Mercy Ship Missions and volunteer activities with Holland Free Health Clinic, Kids Hope USA, Mel Trotter Ministries, and the Cherry Street Health Center in Grand Rapids. Hugh was a member of Christ Memorial Church in Holland, Michigan where he served in a variety of ministries. As a Godly man who loved His Lord and family, Hugh was the hands and feet of Jesus to many. Hugh also thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his two grandchildren while they were enrolled at Hope College. They truly were his pride and joy. Hugh is survived by his wife Marylou; daughter JoLynn and John Webster of Minot, ND; grandchildren Katelyn and Ethan; step-daughters, Diana Winsemius of Zeeland, MI, Ashley Merrick of Allendale, MI; step-grandchildren, Sabrina, Mackenzie, and Arianna Winsemius, Liam Kelly; parents-in-law, Richard and Lucille Gratz of Holland; brothers and sisters-in-law, Peg and Pete Betzinger of Cedar Springs, MI, Jeanette and Andy Compau of Stockbridge, MI, David and Laurie Gratz of California, Richard and Mary Gratz of West Virginia, Russell Gratz of Texas. Visitation will be from 9:00-10:00am Monday, September 28 in the narthex to the main sanctuary at Christ Memorial Church, 595 Graafschap Rd, Holland (please use entrance C) with a funeral service to follow at 10:00am in the main sanctuary. Rev. Fritz Kruithoff will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Hugh's memory may be given to the ministries that meant so much to him: Holland Free Health Clinic, Mercy Ships, or Mel Trotter Ministries.
