Dr. Glen Allen Shugars passed away peacefully and unexpectedly on October 26, 2021 with family at his side. He was born in Kalamazoo on December 14, 1933 to Lester L. and Mary (Doane) Shugars. Glen graduated from State High and shortly after enlisted in the Army, serving as a paratrooper during the Korean Conflict. After his honorable discharge, he attended WMU for three years and was accepted into the dental program at Northwestern University in Chicago, graduating in 1962. He returned to his hometown and enjoyed practicing for 34 years until his retirement in 1996. After a brief retirement, he did public health dentistry for several years. While in practice, Glen had the honor of serving on the board of Northwestern Dental Alumni and was elected president in 1992-93 and given the Distinguished Service Award in 1993. Glen was a member of the ADA, the MDA, and a lifetime member of the Kalamazoo Dental Society. Glen loved sports and played both basketball and baseball in high school and college. He was a golfer and fisherman. His hobby was carving, with many of his cherished bird and duck carvings being shared with family in friends. Glen and his wife, Janice, who survives, were married during his sophomore year of dental school in Iron Mountain, Michigan at Our Savior's Lutheran Church on August 20, 1960. It was truly a loving relationship for 61 years. Together they raised three sons, Dr. Kevin (Patti Schneider) Shugars, Steven Shugars, and Dr. Eric (Nicole) Shugars. His seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren were very special to him. Also surviving are a brother, Wayne Shugars; sister, Ruth Olmsted; along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, John and Lawrence. The family will greet friends Friday, October 29, 2021 from 6-8:00pm at Langeland Family Funeral Homes Burial & Cremation Services, 3926 S 9th St, Kalamazoo, MI 49009.
