passed away on Friday, April 29, 2016 at Wings Home in Allegan, Michigan. Mr. Champion was born May 29, 1924 in Pinegrove Township, Michigan, the son of the late Ralph and Susan (Sackett) Champion. Doug was a 1940 graduate of Mattawan High School. He married the love of his life, Frances, on June 29, 1947 in Bloomingdale, Michigan, and were able to share 69 years together as husband and wife. Doug was dedicated to his country and was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in WWII. He spent over 50 years as a barber at Roosenberg's Barber Shop in Plainwell. In his youth, Doug loved to play baseball, which led to a love of watching the Detroit Tiger's play later in life. Doug enjoyed spending his time gardening and especially liked growing strawberries. Another passion of his was woodworking. His talent has provided his children and grandchildren with special gifts made with love that will be cherished. Doug is survived by his wife, Frances; their four children: Robert and Denise Champion, Denise and David Kosiara, Jayne Champion, Diann and Ronald Rose; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Ken Champion. He was preceded in death by his brother Joseph Champion. A private military graveside service will be held Monday, May 2 at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, Michigan. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Doug's name to Wings Home, 530 Linn Street, Allegan, MI 49010.
