Dorothy Mary (Wilson) Hudson was that rare person who was an excellent listener. She loved to hear stories, even for the hundredth time. She laughed at everyone’s jokes but seldom told one herself so as not to upstage anybody. If you wanted to sing, she wanted you to “sing some more.” She listened attentively to other people’s political views and declined to argue much. If someone wanted to talk about religion or medical problems, their grandchildren or the weather, she was entirely happy to hear them out. She joined book clubs and chaired committees precisely so she could learn other people’s points of view.

Her favorite people to listen to were teenagers. She wanted to know all about their sports, their friends, and their schoolwork. If they had a rebellious point of view, she encouraged them to explain how they came to that place, without judging or debating with them.

She was devoted to her Catholic faith and had amazing life-long friendships at St. Joseph Parish. Never once did she label anyone a “sinner,” nor would she express disapproval for others religious beliefs. Her parish priest, Fr. Michael Hazard, was her best friend.

Dorothy was born March 10, 1923, in Battle Creek, Michigan, daughter of D’Arcy and Agatha Burgie Wilson. Her surviving siblings are Marge and Russ Brandenburg, and Ed and Anita Wilson. Her sisters, Betty and Jean Francis, preceded her in death.

After graduating from Nazareth College and working as a registered dietician at Borgess Hospital, Dorothy married O. Patrick Hudson on August 12, 1950. Their adventures spanned fifty-one years, through all of which, Pat told his funny stories and she laughed. Pat went on ahead in 2001. She joined him the day after his birthday, January 14, 2018.

Dorothy was a wonderful mother. She and Pat have eight children and eight daughters and sons-in-law: Patrick and Gina Frasson-Hudson, Jim and Katie Hudson, Anne and Rich Brenz, Terry and Mary Hudson, Tim and Paula Hudson, Jane and Dean Knuth, Joyce and Dave Morris, Kate and David Koskinen. She delighted in her seventeen grandchildren and six great-grand children: Ben Hudson, (great grandchildren Oliver and Rose), Caroline and Nick Magnone, (Ceci and Nora), Sarah and Michael Neault, (Cal), John Hudson, Phil and Taylor Brenz, Alex Hudson, Kara Hudson, Rachel Hudson, Andrew Hudson, Troy Hudson (Jarrett), Ellen Knuth, Martha Knuth, Kevin and Chau Morris, Scott Morris, Craig Morris, Will Koskinen, and Ian Koskinen. Her close relationships with her niece Mary Kay Shunneson, and nephew, Bill Donohue, always brought her great joy.

Dorothy Mary Hudson, age 94, died on Sunday, January 14, 2018. She was devoted to her Catholic faith and had amazing life-long friendships at St. Joseph Parish. Patrick Hudson in 2001.Visit with family and friends while sharing food and refreshments on Thursday (Jan. 18) from 4-8 pm at the Betzler Life Story Funeral Home, 6080 Stadium Drive; Kalamazoo (269) 375-2900, where the Rosary will be recited at 7:30 pm that evening.
