Doris Wood was born in Saginaw, Michigan, on November 22, 1918, the daughter of Thomas and Exzilda (Bonamie) Wood. Doris was a member of St. Mary’s Parish in Flint at the time of her entrance into the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Nazareth on February 2, 1936. She received the name Sister Mary Albert at her reception on August 25, 1936 but later returned to the use of her baptismal name. She pronounced first vows on August 26, 1938, and final vows on August 26, 1941.

Sister Doris earned an A.B. degree in Business Administration from Nazareth College and a Master of Arts degree in Business Administration from the University of Notre Dame. She pursued graduate studies at the University of Michigan and earned an Educational Specialist degree in High School Administration.

Sister Doris began teaching at St. Philip Neri and also taught at St. Margaret Mary, St. Anne, St. Michael, St. Benedict and St. Rita, all in the Archdiocese of Detroit. Additionally, she taught at Mary’s in Niles and St. John Vianney in Flint, Michigan. From 1960-1963 Sister Doris taught at Nazareth College and in 1968 worked for the Kalamazoo Diocesan Education Office. She then spent 8 years as the Regional Coordinator for SSJ Administration in Flint before returning to teaching Adult Education in Port Huron, Michigan. At St. Christopher Parish in Marysville, Michigan she was the secretary and Parish Minister for 21 years. Sister Doris then retired and returned to Nazareth where she volunteered her time in Nazareth house support services.

Sr. Doris was always generous with her time and service. Even as it became more difficult for her, she used her talents as fully as possible. She was especially devoted to her friend Sister Mary Elizabeth Naughton and spent time with her daily. One could count on seeing her at every Nazareth event. She was a most loyal Sister of St. Joseph. Surely she must have heard God calling: “Come O faithful one, enter into the joy I have prepared for you.”

Sister Doris died August 20, 2016. Sister was born November 22, 1918 in Saginaw, MI, the daughter of Thomas and Exzilda (Bonamie) Wood and was a member of the Congregation of St. Joseph. She was preceded in death by her brother Herman Wood; survived by her sister-in-law Marilyn Wood and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
