93, passed away peacefully on Saturday evening, April 8th, at Rose Arbor Hospice Residence. She had been a Kalamazoo resident for over 70 years. Doris Marguerite Vogel was born July 23, 1923, in Grand Haven, MI. She was the youngest of four daughters born to Ernestine (Ornstein) and Frederick Vogel. She was fond of telling people that she had "been driving since 12 years old" as she continued to navigate her beloved scooter until just a few weeks ago. Doris completed her BS degree from Western Michigan University in 1945, and began teaching typing and shorthand at Portage (now Central) High School. Later, she served as a substitute teacher at the grade school level in local public schools. After World War II, Doris married Charles Preston in the fall of 1946 and had two children, Steven (Denver) and Janine (Los Angeles). She enjoyed spending time at the beach at Grand Haven State Park, gardening, reading, and crafts. Doris is survived by her children and one granddaughter, Natalie (Denver). She was predeceased by sisters Selma O'Brien, Matilda More, and Clara Hughes, and by her husband Charlie. Private services will be held by her family this summer at Lake Forest Cemetery in Grand Haven. Donations may be made to Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo, MI http://www.hospiceswmi.org/waystodonate/.
