Donald Vetter

Vetter, Donald G. 12/22/1942 - 12/15/2020 Naples Community Hospital, Naples Florida Don, age 77, passed away peacefully at Naples Community Hospital, Naples Florida on Tuesday, December 15, 2020. Don was born December 22, 1942, the son of John H. and Florance (Gustin) Vetter, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He was raised in Galesburg and graduated from Galesburg-Augusta High School. Don married his high school sweetheart and love of his life for 57 years, Susan M. Drake in 1963. They stayed in Galesburg to raise their four children, John, Kimberly, Michael and Stacy. In 1957, at the age of 14, Don received accommodations for heroism from Michigan Congressman Augustus Johnson and local leaders for risking his life to save an elderly Galesburg woman from the path of a freight train. He supported his community as a member of the volunteer fire department, JC Organization, school board member, and one term as mayor of Galesburg. Don work at the Upjohn Company for 27 years. After retiring he and Sue split their time at homes in both Florida and Michigan. He was also a member of the Naples Land Yacht Harbor Board of Directors for 12 years. Don enjoyed hunting and golf, but his happiest times were those spent with family and close friends. Don was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings, David G. Vetter, Marily K. Zurawski, and Barbra Vetter-Moore. He is survived by his wife Susan, John D (Misty) Vetter, Michael G. Vetter, Stacy L. Vetter, his six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. In accordance with Don's wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation or memorial service. A private family interment will be held at a later date.
