Surrounded by his loving family, Donald O. Thornton, age 88, passed away Thursday, April 27, 2017 at his residence. Donald was born in Racine, July 10, 1928, son of the late Oliver and Gladys (nee: Becker) Thornton.

Donald proudly served in the United States Navy from 1945-1949. On September 15, 1950 in Dubuque, Iowa he was united in marriage to Jean L. Kwapil who preceded him in death, November 3, 2011. He was last employed by the City of Racine as Supervisor of the Department of Public Works for thirty-two years. He was a member of the City of Racine “20 Year Club.” An avid outdoorsman, Don enjoyed fishing, wildlife and camping in Door County with family and friends. He always looked forward to his excursions at the Seven Mile Fair and was a huge Packer fan. More than anything he devoted and treasured time spent with his family.

He will be dearly missed by his eight children, Jackie Dresen, Glen (Cindy) Thornton, Guy Thornton, Perry (Wendy) Thornton, Kenny (Cheri) Thornton, Becky (Paul Hughes) Carbajal, Cory Kelley, Mitch Thornton; his grandchildren, Shonna (Nick) Royer, Erik (Sheena) Mohrbacher, Deven Mohrbacher, Nickie (Jeremiah) Bass, Sara (Scott) Perry, Paul (Brenda) Kraus, Josh Thornton (Samantha), Justin (Amy) Thornton, Akashia (Elishia) Allen, Jason Vasey, Tia Thornton, Thor Thornton, Andrew (Andrea) Carbajal, Angel Carbajal, Jeanna Pearson, Amber Thornton, Brandy (Demetrius) LaGrone, Amanda Thornton-Avila, Richard Villarreal, and Isaac Garcia; 52 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren with one on the way; sister, Gracie Bahr; brother-in-law, Robert Kwapil; faithful companion, Chester; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends. In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Rachel and his son-in-law, John “Bill” Dresen.

Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday May 3, 2017, 11:30 a.m. Interment with Full Military Honors will follow at the Southern Wisconsin Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, Town of Dover. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the funeral home on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:30 a.m. Memorials to Aurora Hospice have been suggested.
