Delbert "Del" Hill, age 87, of Kalamazoo, MI and Lake Worth, FL passed away peacefully on Friday, July 15, 2016. Del was born on May 12, 1929 in Proctor, MN; the son of Roy and Margaret (Stoneouse) Hill. He was a lifelong resident of Kalamazoo and enjoyed wintering at his condo in Florida after his retirement. Del graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1947. He entered the United States Army in November of 1950 and proudly served his country states side as a diesel and heavy equipment mechanic at various U.S. bases. He was honorably discharged, with the rank of corporal, in November of 1952. On October 23, 1953, Delbert was united in marriage to Betty (Bucher) Hill, who preceded him in death in October of 2011. Delbert was employed as a welder by Rudd/Rheem Mfg. for 15 years. He worked for Checker Cab and Downing Electric while pursuing his electrician's licensing. In 1970 he started his own business; Hill Electric, and worked until his retirement in 1992. The torch was then passed to his son, Larry, who currently owns and operates the business. In his younger days, Del loved to square dance and dance to the music of the big bands with his wife, Betty. He was an avid Detroit Tigers fan and loved to watch professional golf. He liked to visit the casinos and try his hand at the craps tables. He loved the ocean, big boats, hot air balloons and air shows featuring the Blue Angels or Thunderbirds. Del had a friendly, easygoing personality and could often be found enjoying the company of his family, grandchildren, and many good friends. His thoughtfulness and kindness were well known. Those left to grieve his passing and cherish his memory, are his son Larry (Nanette) Hill; grandchildren, Justin Hill and Alex Hill; his friend and companion Edith Wood; friend and niece Cheryl (Dale) Westbrook; many other nieces, nephews, friends, and a two wonderful church families. Del is preceded in death by his birth parents, his step-mothers, Olina Hill and Marie Hill respectively, and his wife Betty. Per his wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at the Covenant Church of Kalamazoo, 5708 East Main St., Kalamazoo, MI 49048 on Thursday, August 11, 2016 at 11am, with Pastor David Beetham officiating.
