David (Dave) Taylor, 82 of Mesick, passed away Friday, August 1, 2014 following a long battle with cancer. He was surrounded by friends and family throughout the day whose presence and love provided comfort during his last hours.

Born in Otsego, Michigan, he married Elsie Fretter in Grant in 1951. They moved to the Grand Rapids area and began their family. With five youngsters in tow, Dave and Elsie moved to Mesick. He began his career as a truck driver in 1964. In 1995, he retired from long-haul trucking, proud of his four-million mile career, and of the fact he had never caused an accident.

Dave was a competitive race car driver. A prized possession of his family members is a photo of him with his championship car, #72. For many years his favorite vacation was taking family and friends to the Indy 500.

Once retired, his focus was his family. His tradition of home-made pancakes and holiday fudge have created many memories. Coffee and conversation around the kitchen table brought him great joy. Dave knew no stranger, and welcoming everyone in his home. He enjoyed his yard and flower gardens, and the birds that flocked to his feeders.

Dave was preceded in death by his daughter, Darlene (Taylor) Burton; parents, Homer and Ruby Taylor; brothers, Royal and Homer Taylor and sisters, Doris Taylor and Norene Rodriquez.

He is survived by his wife Elsie; his children, Sandra Taylor, Debra (Asa) McCarthy, Darell (Denise) Taylor and Neal (Teresa) Taylor; sisters, Irene Pavlovic, Alice Burnet, Juanita Boyd, Adah Erbes and his brother George. He deeply loved and was very proud of his grand-great and great-great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 8, at the Mesick United Methodist Church. Please visit Dave's webpage at www.lifestorynet.com to sign the guest book and share a message with his family. The family chose Life Story Funeral Home, Traverse City.
