Holcomb, David David E. Holcomb, 88, of Portage, MI passed away on Monday, May 3rd, 2021. He was holding hands with his two daughters Katie and Sue, while Somewhere Over the Rainbow played in the background. It was a calm and peaceful transition. He is preceded in death by his second wife Alice Holcomb, sibling Carol Sigourney, granddaughter Tara Holcomb, and great-granddaughter Aspen Polomcak. He is survived by his first wife Joan Holcomb, sibling Georgia Hammonds, four children Susan Holcomb, Katherine Holcomb, Charles Holcomb, and Stephen Holcomb, 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He was born on September 17th, 1932 in Battle Creek, MI to Oscar and Alma Holcomb. In high school, he was on the diving team. He attended Western Michigan University to study art and was also active on the school newspaper, the Western Harold. A great marble statue of his was featured at the student union for decades until it mysteriously vanished in the 90's. He went on to become an art teacher at Portage Central High school, where he coached tennis and was commonly tapped to MC events due to his natural gift with words. He went on to self-publish several books of humor, which he thoroughly enjoyed having read out-loud by other family members at family gatherings. At one point in his life he was a sales manager at GHS strings, the famous guitar-string company, which was founded by his parents. He was an avid musician, regularly performing on the guitar and tenor banjo throughout his life, most notably in his Dixi Land Jazz troupe: the New Superior Jazz Band. In his old age he enjoyed creating art, playing ping-pong and giving lessons in ping-pong, art, and music to his grandchildren. He loved playing chess and bowling. Most of all, he loved his family. Caring for his family was the thing that was most important to him in life. That's just the type of man he was. His love and care also extended to his friends and to his community.A celebration of his life will be held on June 26th in Portage, MI.
