Dale L. Van Antwerp, age 69, after a long courageous battle with cancer, died peacefully at home on Monday, September 26, 2016. He was born at Borgess Hospital on March 26, 1947, the second son of Marvin and Florence (Schauer) Van Antwerp. Dale was a lifelong resident of Kalamazoo. A 1965 graduate of Parchment High School, Dale also graduated from WMU in 1970 with a double major in geography and political science. Dale served in the US Air Force from 1970-1974 where he attained the rank of Staff Sargent. He was stationed at Sawyer AFB near Marquette, MI and then Zweibrucken, Germany. He traveled Europe extensively, while stationed in Germany. On May 4, 1991, Dale married Jana Lee Porter. He retired from the Kalamazoo Regional Psychiatric Hospital in 1997 after 28 years of employment. Dale was member of the Schoolcraft Lions Club and served as club president. He volunteered with several organizations including Red Cross Blood Drives, South County Services and Borgess Visiting Nurse & Hospice Service. Dale was a very strong, kind, gentle and caring man. He was honest, generous and thoughtful with a great dry sense of humor. He was interested in meteorology, geography, political science, current events, traveling, listening to music, watching sports on TV especially college football, nature and conservation, animal lover, playing cards, and chess. He loved his family very much and enjoyed spending time with them and his friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, and by his mother-in-law Rita Porter. Surviving are his wife Jana, brother Richard (Carol) Van Antwerp, father-in-law David Porter, sister-in-law Julie (Michael) Noteboom, brother-in-law Stanley Porter, brother-in-law Aaron (Neena) Porter, nieces and nephews Michael (Karen) Van Antwerp, Stacy (Job) Rijssenbeek, Anne Porter, Jeff Porter, Rebecca Porter, Daniel Noteboom, Rachael Noteboom, Alecia (Chris) Ruswinckel, Michael Noteboom, great nieces and nephews Karlee and Maxx Van Antwerp, Lucas and Noah Rijssenbeek, John Porter, Nathan and Matthew Ruswinckel, and Cassidy Noteboom-Holmes. The family will greet friends on Sunday, October 2nd from 2-5pm at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th St., where a funeral service will be held on Monday, October 3rd, 11:00am, Rev. Barbara Van Eck officiating. Following a luncheon, a committal service will take place at Ft. Custer National Cemetery at 2:30pm with military honors rendered.
