Clarence Wilbur Small, age 93, of Kalamazoo, MI passed away on Thursday, September 21, 2017 at his home in Kalamazoo, MI. He and his twin sister Clara were born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on February 1, 1924. Clarence graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1942. He served in the Army AirCorp during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946. Clarence Small was a gifted and versatile musician, mastering the violin, organ and drums. He was nationally-recognized as a member of the "Wings Over Jordan" choral group. Clarence was preceded in death by his parents, brother, sister and wife. Survivors include his sons Thomas Burton, Clarence (Alyson) Small, and his sister, Clara Mayes. A wake will be held Thursday, September 28th, from 5-7 p.m. at the Whitley Memorial Funeral Home at 330 North Westnedge Avenue, Kalamazoo, Michigan. Funeral services are scheduled for 12 p.m., Friday, September 29th at Allen Chapel AME Church, 804 W. North Avenue, Kalamazoo, Michigan. Mr. Small continued his musical journey right until his passing - sharing his love of music with others. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to Sustainable Connexions International Inc., a nonprofit charitable organization led by Clarence's son and daughter in-law focused on the care of orphans in Africa.
