With a life that spanned times of war and times of peace, times plenty and times of want, Chester Majewski was happiest when he was surrounded by his loved ones. He was a hardworking man of great strength and honor who was willing to help others in any way he could. Chet was blessed to share the majority of his life with his true love, and together they were thrilled to witness their family tree blossom to include the children and grandchildren whom he adored. He lived a life of purpose each day, and he took nothing for granted. Although he will be deeply missed, Chet will never be forgotten.

At the end of WWI in 1918, America was recognized as a world leader for the first time. With the eyes of the world focused on our shores for what was to come, we did not disappoint as radios, washing machines, and refrigerators were among the noteworthy pieces of technology that transformed the way we lived our daily lives. The decade that we recall as the Roaring Twenties was a vibrant time, and it was just as this decade was getting started that John and Stephanie (Kwiatkowski) Majewski were eagerly awaiting the birth of their new a baby as spring blossomed in the city of Detroit, Michigan. The big day finally arrived when the baby boy they named Chester drew his first breath on May 10th. He was one of six children and was raised in the family home alongside his siblings, Pauline, Stella, Lottie, Sophie, and Mary.

As the only boy, life for Chester could be an adventure. He developed his lifelong love for fishing while he was growing up, and he was a typical young boy of his generation. As a teen he dropped out of school to help support his parents and sisters as these were the days of the Great Depression. Chet, as he was usually known, had a strong work ethic throughout his life.

With the attack on our naval base in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the landscape of our nation was forever changed. Chet served as a rifleman in the United States Army from July of 1944 through January of 1946. During this time he was part of several battles and campaigns including Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He received the following awards in recognition of his service: the Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon, and the European African Middle as well as the Eastern Theater Ribbon with four Bronze Battle Stars, three Overseas Service Bars, and a Purple Heart Medal. After returning stateside, Chester returned to Detroit where he took a job with Chrysler. He later worked for Mid-American Trucking Company.

Life was forever changed for Chet when he met the woman who would forever hold the key to his heart. Her name was Rosemary (Joeton), and they met because she was a coworker and friend of Chester’s younger sister, Mary. One fateful day Mary invited Rosemary to meet him, and the rest is history as they say, which is interesting since Rosemary got all dressed up for their first date - only to be taken fishing after dinner! That date did lead to more dates, and it wasn’t long before the couple found themselves deeply in love. With a desire to establish a life together, Chester and Rosemary were married on February 26, 1947. Throughout their marriage fishing remained his favorite pastime, and his wife always referred to herself as a “fishing widow.” Together Chester and his wife were blessed to welcome four children including John, Mike, Ed, and Vivian into their hearts and home.

During his retirement years, Chester had more time to spend doing the things he enjoyed, often with the people he loved, too. For years, he and his wife traveled to St. Petersburg, Florida, where they met up with friends and enjoyed the sunshine for about six weeks. Chet and his wife also took road trips out to Colorado to see their son, Ed, stopping to enjoy the beautiful sites along the way including some casinos where they tried their luck. It was a grand celebration when he and his wife celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Their children gave them a surprise party, and they also presented Chester and his wife with an amazing trip out West. This trip took them from Los Angeles down the coast to San Francisco and Napa Valley. Of course there was also a stop in Las Vegas on the way home! Chester was so proud of his children and all that they had become. He loved being a grandfather, and he looked forward to hosting everyone at his house for Christmas.

When his children were grown, Chet continued to be an active part of his children’s lives. He loved being with his grandchildren, and he held a special place in his grandchildren’s hearts. Stephanie loved searching for the jar of pennies he hid for her somewhere in the house using the map he also made. Chester always was such a fun grandpa. He and Rachel shared a love for prunes, and her favorite place to eat them was sitting on his lap. Every time she went to his house, grandma would bring out a brand new jar for her and grandpa to share. Samantha loved being with her whole family, and she could easily see that her grandpa was happiest when they were all gathered around the table. All the granddaughters also looked forward to the annual Canton Fishing Derby when they all took part in their grandfather’s favorite activity - fishing! Chester was always happy to help his children with various home projects, usually saying, “If this was my house I would do it this way.”

Although his family was always first and foremost in Chester’s life, he also kept busy in other ways. In addition to fishing, he enjoyed traveling, watching the Tigers, watching the fishing channel and reading Field and Stream magazine, and playing cards. Chet was known to frequent the casino in Canada where he played Keno, he liked cooking for others, and there was nothing quite like a cold beer in his book. He was a longtime member of St. Christine’s where he also served as an usher.

All who knew Chester Majewski would agree that he was an extraordinary man to know and love. Although he was more quiet by nature, when he spoke his words were meaningful and well formed. Chet loved his family more than anything on this side of heaven, and his devotion to helping others was unmatched. His memory will be forever cherished.

Chester "Chet" Majewski passed away July 23, 2015 at the age of 94. Beloved husband of the late Rosemary. Loving father of John (Sharon), Mike, Ed (Laura), and Vivian (Doug) Rohrbach. Dearest grandfather of Stephanie, Rachel, and Samantha Rohrbach, Chris Swain, and Charlie, Ashley and Kelly Avery.
