Carl Allen Porter, 92, passed away on Sunday, July 1, 2018 at his home in Goodlettsville, Tennessee.

Visitation will be held on Friday, July 6, 2018 at 1:00 PM, with the Service at 2:00 PM at McCowen & Secord Family Funeral Home (Marshall-Gren Chapel) located at 120 South Woodhams Street, Plainwell, Michigan 49080. Burial will be immediately following the funeral service and will be in the Prairie Home Cemetery located in Richland, Michigan.

Carl was born in Muskegon, Michigan on April 17, 1926. He graduated from Richland High School and enlisted in the United States Navy where he served from 1944 to 1946. While home on leave, Carl married his sweetheart, Dorothy Annabelle (Kirkland) in January, 1946; they were married 62 years.

Carl later went on to continue his education and graduated from Stautzenberger College with a B.A. in Accounting in 1963. Carl was hired by Pinkerton Tobacco Company, Toledo, Ohio as a Cost Accountant in April 1963. After several promotions over the years, in 1973 he transferred with the Pinkerton Tobacco Company to Owensboro, Kentucky as Secretary-Auditor, Assistant Treasurer and Office Manager. In 1978 he was promoted to Controller and Secretary and then one year later to Vice President, Financial Planning and Control. He retired in 1982 after 19 years of service, at the age of 55.

After his retirement, Carl and Dorothy remained in Owensboro, however they enjoyed spending their winters in Zephyrhills, Florida. Carl enjoyed playing shuffleboard and later horseshoes. Carl was very competitive and it didn’t take him long before he was racking up the trophies and ribbons in the local tournaments. He was also an avid bowler and won numerous trophies over the years (semi-pro), and enjoyed fishing, swimming, home remodeling, and was one heck of a card player – Carl rarely lost a game, his mind was sharp, and he knew every card that was in his opponent’s hand – so much so that nobody wanted to sit next to him!

Carl is survived by three children, Sharon Trabbic, Lois Feher, and Bob Porter, all of Tennessee, Brother, Al (Barb) Porter of Arizona, one Sister, Marge (Jim) Fosgate of Temperance, Michigan. Other members of his family include a daughter-in-law, Marlene Porter of Toledo, Ohio, Sister-in-law, Pearly Porter of Georgia, Sister-in-law, Doris Steele of Plainwell, Michigan, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and step grandchildren.

Carl is preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy (2008), his son Larry Porter (2006), and Brother, Dick (2005).
