In the heart of Bonnie McGuire, there was nothing greater than being the beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother of those she held most dear. Bonnie was a good natured woman who, although frugal, gave generously for the sake of others. She had a love for laughter which filled her home and blessed the lives of many. With ways all her own, Bonnie added a special touch to everything she did and forged lasting memories to be cherished with fond remembrance for years to come.

The year 1929 was a time of mixed blessings in our nation, yet for James Earl and Margaret Mary (Tighe) Endeman of Omaha, Nebraska, the days were blessed with the May 10, 1929 birth of their little girl, Bonnie Jean. Born and raised in Omaha, Bonnie grew up alongside her sister, Mary Ann. Considered a tomboy from an early age, Bonnie loved her childhood dogs, Corky, a Boston terrier, and Cappy her Scotty who were never far from her side. A child of her generation, Bonnie enjoyed typical childhood adventures and especially the outdoors.

Bonnie loved to read, and continued to do so throughout her life. She took tap dance lessons well into her youth, and at the age of six began taking piano lessons. Bonnie received her early education from St. Bernard's Grammar School where she enjoyed the friendships of many. In addition to becoming proficient at the piano, Bonnie also began to acquire her beautiful singing voice, and even became an operatic singer as a young adult. However, the tomboy in Bonnie always remained. She was never afraid to get her hands dirty, enjoyed hunting, and loved playing baseball and roller skating.

After graduating from St. Johns High School in Omaha, Bonnie went on to attend the Detroit College of Business in Dearborn, Michigan, as well as Wayne County Community College in Detroit, Michigan. For a time, Bonnie enjoyed a career as a comptometer operator for the phone company. Before long, she married and remained happy as a homemaker and a loving mother to her children. She was involved in the lives of her children, and volunteered often in their activities. For many years, Bonnie didn't drive, and always walked wherever she went.

Bonnie loved to cook and bake. Most of all, she loved creating a comfortable, warm and loving home for her family. Blessed with the births of six children, they were Bonnie's greatest joy. She was often strict and firm, but was always fair. Bonnie's home was filled with the love of dogs over the years which were part of the family. As a family, they enjoyed memorable vacations. It was a trip of a lifetime to New Orleans with friends from Holy Redeemer church in 1967. In 1975 they went to Phoenix, Arizona, and they visited Disneyland in California and all it had to offer. Bonnie especially loved visiting family in Nebraska. Even simple things, like taking the kids to the drive-in on a summer's night complete with bags of Lay's potatoe chips and chuckles candy was enjoyed by all.

To her children, Bonnie was a nurturing and discerning woman whose dedication knew no bounds. Sweet memories of her making Cream of Wheat or oatmeal on cold school mornings or making hot cocoa and chicken noodle soup for her children after a cold day of outside play was just one of the many ways Bonnie showed her concern and love. She knew how to pinch a penny, but was generous towards others, especially her children, even if it meant going without, herself. During tornado warnings, she'd huddle her flock into the fruit cellar with a flashlight handy. But the treasured smell of her cooking in the kitchen, or especially hanging freshly laundered clothes on the outside line to dry are also imbedded into the childhood memories of her children. When grandchildren came along, she loved them so much she constantly wore a sweatshirt with all their names on it.

Bonnie loved the holidays and made the festivities extra special. She loved St. Patrick's Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings with family, Easter dinners and eggs hunts, as well as Halloween. Together they had the greatest time with sing-a-longs, and she always made each of her children's birthdays and graduation parties a day to remember.

Later in life, Bonnie attended college part-time, and for two years worked at Holy Redeemer Convent as a cook. She also worked as a paraprofessional at Garden City Public Schools for nine years. Some of Bonnie's hobbies included sewing and crafts. She loved playing baseball and badminton with the kids, and liked bowling with family and friends. Together they played many board games over the years, and she enjoyed cards, too. As a member of Holy Redeemer Church, Bonnie sang in the church choir.

An avid fan of the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Red Wings, Bonnie also loved her Nebraska teams. She loved the music of her youth, and romantic tunes from the forties and fifties. Some of her favorites included “Danny Boy”, “Jean, Jean”, “Ave Maria”, “Red Roses for a Blue Lady”, “Moon River”, and music from “Porgy and Bess”. She loved kicking up her heels square dancing with her wolf patrol group. Bonnie was also an avid reader and remained so until she could no longer see. She was fond of reading books on history, Western novels, the Reader's Digest, and the daily newspaper. Bonnie was known to often rotate the TV antenna in an effort to get a better picture. Shows such as The Walton's and Little House on the Prairie reminded her of her childhood. She also had favorite game shows, and liked documentaries and News Talk Radio. The "Sound of Music", "The Sting", and "Gone With the Wind" were her all-time favorite movies.

Bonnie possessed a personality all her own which endeared her to those that knew and loved her best. She had the most unique and funny phrases, and with six children, she learned to take a prank quite well. She was always good-natured when it came to their shenanigans, even despite the infamous hanging spiders! Bonnie enjoyed her coffee and appreciated good food, especially desserts. She was always trying new recipes for her family, but there were a few she never lived down, such as her attempt with cod fish soup and the Easter bunny cake disaster!

It was clear to see that Bonnie McGuire had a song in her heart. She radiated goodness to all she encountered, and set a fine example for her children to live by. She stood her ground when it mattered most, yet she was just as soft hearted, and offered the warmest, most loving hugs anyone could imagine. Just as Bonnie loved flowers, so too will her memory continue to bloom in the hearts of those she loved as she is deeply missed.

At the age of 85, Bonnie Jean McGuire, of Canton, passed away on Saturday, February 14, 2015. She was the loving mother of Christine Marie Marciniak, Carol Ann, Michael Patrick (Marjorie), Denise Kay, James Joseph (Elaine), Colleen Therese (Michael) Heraty; dearest grandmother of 14 and great-grandmother of 13; and dear sister of Mary Ann (Jack) Suchan.
