Betty V. Stamm, age 93, of Portage, MI passed away on Monday afternoon, October 31, 2016 at Upjohn Community Care Center. She was born on August 2, 1923 in Kalamazoo to John and Margaret (Chapman) Visscher, and was a lifelong resident of Portage, Michigan. Betty was a cheerleader at Portage High School, learned to fly an airplane, went to Parsons Business College. She served her country in the United States Navy (WAVES) from 1944-1946 as Yeoman 2nd Class, and also worked for The Upjohn Co. On August 28, 1948, she married John Stamm, staying happily married until John passed away on April 12, 2008. Also preceding her in death were a sister and brother, Joan and Robert Visscher. Surviving are her two children: Tim Stamm of Augusta, Ml, and Carol Stamm of Plainwell; brother: Jim (Jan) of Aurora, Colorado; and several nieces, nephews and cousins, including Nancy Simonds of Portage, and many dear friends. Visitation for Betty will be from 5-8 PM on Friday, Nov. 4, at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre Avenue. Committal services with military honors will be at 12:30 PM on Saturday, Nov. 5, at Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park Chapel, 3941 S. Westnedge Avenue. All are welcome to attend. A memorial service to celebrate Betty's life will follow at 2:00 PM at Pathfinder Church, 8740 S. Westnedge Avenue. All are encouraged to wear red or pink in honor of our beautiful Betty. In lieu of flowers, memorials for Betty may be given to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan, Pathfinder Church, Christian Neighbors Food Pantry or the charity of your choice . Betty's family wishes to thank the loving and hardworking staff of Upjohn Community Care Center for their devotion to Betty these past three and a half years, and Hospice Care of SW Michigan for all the comfort they provided Betty in her final months.
