Betty Richards went to be with her Lord on August 18, 2020, with her loving family by her side at Story Point Assisted Living, Portage, Michigan. Betty was born in Portage, Michigan on August 26, 1933, the daughter of Valentine Orosz and Julia Nemeth. She was a bright and shining star in the lives of her family and her friends, and like an immortal star her light still glows in the hearts of those who loved her. She had great faith in the Lord and shared that faith with everyone whose life she touched. Betty never had children of her own but was a constant and loving presence in the lives of three generations of nieces and nephews. She faithfully attended their activities until she could no longer physically do so, and even then, cheered them from afar. Betty lived a full and happy life in the Kalamazoo area, but was always an avid traveler. She toured throughout the United States and Europe, including an adventurous visit to Hungary, the land of her ancestors, when it was still behind the Iron Curtain. She also loved live music and attended many gospel concerts. In April 2018, she suffered a debilitating stroke, which paralyzed her right side, and took her ability to speak. It could not however break her spirit. She found new ways of communicating, and never lost her optimistic outlook, nor her radiant smile. Betty was employed for several years with Hazeltine Perkins and then with Borgess Hospital Medical Records Department, until retiring in her middle seventies. Betty's family and friends mourn her loss but will forever cherish the memory of her kind and loving soul. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Gus, Valentine, George and Joseph, sisters; Mary Shorter and Julia Orosz; former husband, Ray Richards. She is survived by one sister, Erma Draper of Kalamazoo, and numerous nephew and nieces spanning three generations. There will be a private graveside service with a celebration of life at a future date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Andrew's Community Church or Elara Caring Hospice of Kalamazoo.
