Betty Mattheis

Betty Jane Mattheis, age 89, of Portage, MI passed away Monday afternoon, December 26, 2016. Betty was born October 11, 1927 in Kalamazoo, MI to the late Herbert and Sarah (Dustin) Goodwin. Betty was employed for 32 years at Michigan Bell Telephone as a supervisor in operator services and the business office. After her retirement in 1978, she worked as a realtor associate for 12 years at PRC Bertolissi and Rodger Reily Realtor. Betty enjoyed traveling with her husband John on Canadian fishing trips and vacationing in Florida in the winter. She was a member of Lord of Life Lutheran Church and the American Legion Auxiliary Post 475 in Schoolcraft. She was formerly a volunteer at the Shepherd Center and Meals On Wheels. One of Betty's great joys in life was providing food and caring for those in need. On October 11, 1947 Betty was united in marriage to her loving husband, John Mattheis who preceded her in death on July 25, 2008. She is survived by her children, Elgin (Shirley) Mattheis, Carol (Carl) Coonce; 7 grandchildren; sister and brother, Georgia Piper, Herbert (Beverly) Goodwin; and several nieces and nephews. Friends may meet the family from 5-8pm Thursday evening, December 29 and from 9:30-10:30am Friday, December 30 at the Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 9420 Portage Rd.Services will be held at 10:30am Friday at the church with Pastor Joan Herbon officiating.
