Life Story / Obituary

Betty June DeVries, age 94. Passed peacefully on January 29, 2017 at Bronson Commons in Mattawan. She was born on June 6, 1922 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Vern and Georgia Scott. She was united in marriage to Andrew DeVries on April 5, 1941.

Betty was the most popular waitress in Kalamazoo. She was crowned Queen of Trays in February on 1956. Betty won with a total of 114,200 votes. She worked at Nash’s Restaurant on Portage Road.

Betty didn’t stop there…

The Portage Rotary Club honored her on the 1st Annual Curtsey Award on February of 1972. Sixteen years after she won Queen of Trays. The award was given because she best typified a true lady according to Paul Wartner.

Her grandchildren have great memories of her noodle prints on the ceiling to test their doneness. Dixie cups of M & M’s to Windmill cookies. And the best fried eggs on the planet. At Christmas with her Tootsie Pop Christmas tree and Black Jack candies next to her chair.

Betty had many interests from playing cards, doing crossword puzzles in the TV Guide, watching Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy and couldn’t miss The Young & The Restless.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew DeVries in 1992; 2 sons: Randy DeVries in 2010 and David (Mike) DeVries in 2014. She is survived by 3 children: Donna DeVries, Damon (Ronald) Devries and Dawn Pachner; 15 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

Cremation has taken place and there will be no service at Betty’s request. A memorial will be held at a later date.
