The angels came to get Alice on Thursday, April 21, 2016 at St. Elizabeth’s Nursing Home in Janesville, Wisconsin. She was born in Evansville, July 16, 1914, daughter of the late Daniel and Ellen (Nee: Dunphy) Finnane. After graduating from high school she befriended Catherine Conway, from nearby Janesville. Catherine introduced Alice to her brother James at a dance. He became the love of her life. They married on November 24, 1938. James preceded her in death on December 12, 1980.

To know her was to love her. She was the proudest mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother anyone could know. One of the highlights of Alice’s life was to celebrate her 100th birthday in July of 2014 with nearly 200 family members, relatives and friends. Another highlight was meeting Pope John Paul II, at the Vatican. She was also very proud that all six of her children graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Alice was a devoted homemaker and wonderful hostess, always happy to entertain friends and relatives in her home. Her specialties included her delicious ginger snap cookies and her world-class chip dip. Alice is believed to have been the oldest member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Alice is survived by her four children, Daniel (Kathy) Conway of Cherry Hills, CO, John (Sally) Conway of Timnath, CO, Cathleen (David) Steel of Denver, CO, Mary (Kenneth) Baldwin of Denver, CO; daughter-in-law, Kari Conway of Belview, MN; son-in-law, Robert Baker of Hereford, TX; 16 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. They will miss her laugh, her charm and her love.

She is also survived by four sisters-in-law, Helen Conway, Margaret Disch, Delores Conway, all of Janesville, Dr. Anna Marie Ettinger of Fenton, MI; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends. In addition to her parents and husband, James, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Ellen Baker; son, James Conway; and her ten brothers and sisters.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, April 26, 2016, 11:00 A.M. at Nativity of Mary Parish, 313 East Wall Street, Janesville, with Rev. Rob Butz officiating. Relatives and friends may meet with the family Monday at the Allen-Meredith Funeral Home, 103 W. Main St., Evansville, from 4:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. and Tuesday in Janesville at the church from 10:00 A.M. until time of Mass at 11:00 A.M. Interment will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Croak Settlement. Memorials may be made to St. Elizabeth’s Nursing Home, 109 S. Atwood Avenue, Janesville, WI, 53545.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to the Sisters of Charity and the staff of St. Elizabeth’s for their loving care of our Mother and Grandmother.
