Went to be with his Lord and Savior, Wednesday afternoon, January 9, 2019. Al was born June 20, 1927 in Kalamazoo the son of Henry and Wynanda (Sopjes) Koning. He was a veteran serving in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Prior to his retirement in 1984, he was employed for 36 years with the Upjohn Company as a chemistry assistant. Al was a member of the Covenant Presbyterian Church in Holland, and one of the founding members of the Singing Crusaders. He enjoyed coaching men's and women's fastpitch softball and volunteering with Wycliffe Associates. On August 1, 1998 he was united in marriage to Sally (Boukma) who survives. Also surviving are his children, Barbara Thompson, Alan (Susan) Koning, William (Cheryl) Koning, David (Debra) Koning; 4 grandchildren, Stephanie (John) Gibson, Tom Koning, Michelle Koning, Ben Koning; 3 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Hester; and several nieces and nephews. Al was preceded in death by a brother, John; and 2 sisters, Gertrude, and Henrietta. Services will be held on Monday, January 14 at 12:00 noon at the Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1015 East 32nd Street, Holland, MI 49423. Friends may meet the family Sunday, January 13 from 2-4 and 6-8pm at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th Street and on Monday from 11:00-12:00 at the church. Private interment will be in Ft. Custer National Cemetery with full military honors. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Singing Crusaders, Wycliffe Bible Translators c/o Chuck and Barb Micheals, or the Baptist Children's Home.
