Albert J. Kooi, age 68, of Otsego, MI went to be with the Lord Monday afternoon, April 25, 2016. Al was born June 3, 1947 in Hammond, IN the son of Ben and Jenny (Dykhuis) Kooi. He was a graduate of Illiana Christian High School in Lansing, IL. Al was employed for several years with Consumers Concrete and was a member of Hope Reformed Church where he served as both Elder and Deacon and various other capacities. Al's greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren. Al also enjoyed fishing with his brother in law, Art; hunting with Mike and Kathy Koets, gardening, cooking, and playing Santa at Christmas time for family and others in need. On June 20, 1969 Al was united in marriage to his loving wife of nearly 47 years, the former Judy Wiers, who survives. Also surviving are his children, Amy (Steve) Vlietstra, Scott Kooi; 3 grandchildren, Kayla, Carter, and Kendra "Pook"; brothers, Barney Kooi, Bill and Lorraine Kooi; in-laws, Dorothy Kooi, Carol Eenigenburg, Art (Ruth) Wiers, Tom (Cindy) Wiers; many beloved nieces and nephews; and special friends, Dorothy Hilton and Brenda Hellenga. Al was preceded in death by sisters, Christine and Stella; brother, Ben; sister-in-law, Virginia; brothers-in-law, Jake, John, and Rich. The family would like to thank Fresenius Dialysis Center and Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan for the wonderful care and love they gave. A service to celebrate Al's life will be held at 3:00pm Sunday, May 1 at Hope Reformed Church, 910 Jenks Blvd with Rev. Rick Veenstra, Rev. Dr. Doug McClintic, and Rev. Arthur Wiers officiating. A memorial gathering will be held Saturday, April 30 from 3-6pm at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th Street. Private interment will be in Genesse Prairie Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan, Hope Reformed Church, or the Kalamazoo Area Renal Support Group.
