Life Story / Obituary

Adriana B. Rutgers, age 89, passed away September 15, 2015 at Holland Community Hospital, with her two daughters by her side. She was born October 12, 1925 in Hudsonville, Michigan, daughter of Jeanette (Everse) and Benjamin Douma.

As a business woman, Adriana owned and operated—with her husband, Russ—R.J. Rutgers Men’s Shop and Adrienne’s Boutique in Holland for nearly fifty years. As an artist, she enjoyed painting in both watercolor and oil her entire life. She always enjoyed gardening and flowers, and was an interior designer at heart.

Prior to owning the clothing store, Adriana attended Hope College and met her husband just as WWII was ending. In her later years, Ade lived in Venice, Florida with her companion, Leslie “Bud” Karel, enjoying many happy days of shared memories from their high school years.

Adriana was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Russell; granddaughter, Joan Snively Smith; and her sister, Katherine DePue. She is survived by her daughters, Dian (Robert) Taylor and Gail Rutgers; both of Holland. Adriana is also survived by her two great-granddaughters, Madline and Claudine Dekker of Spring Lake, and two nephews, Dan and Mark DePue.

Cremation has taken place through Dykstra Funeral Home – Mulder Chapel. A small private memorial service will take place at a later date.

The family wishes to thank the many health care workers who cared for Adriana at Holland Hospital.

Because her dogs were such a joy and large part of her life, a donation may be made in Adriana’s memory to Harbor Humane Society; 14345 Bagley St., West Olive.
