Surrounded by his loving family, A. John Swan, age 79, passed away Monday, March 21, 2016 at his home. John was born in Beaver Dam, WI, April 30, 1936, son of the late Alvin A. and Milly E. (Nee: Baker) Swan. John attended the public schools of Beaver Dam, graduating from Beaver Dam High School in 1954. He proudly served in the Military Intelligence Branch of the United States Army for two years, attaining the rank of First Lieutenant. On October 10, 1964 he was united in marriage to Mona J. Reiter at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Wauwatosa, WI.

A graduate of Norbert College, John received his Master’s Degree in Social Welfare from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1969. His employment history includes: caseworker for the Racine County Department of Public Welfare, social worker for Catholic Social Services, coordinator of the Racine Areawide Model Project on Aging, Director of Social Services for Lincoln Lutheran of Racine, a social worker/counselor for Racine Unified Schools, and Supervisor of school social workers for the Racine Unified School District. He retired from the school district in 1991. Following his retirement, he served as a consultant to Racine Unified and was a Circuit Court Bailiff.

John was active in the Racine Community. He served on the Board of Directors of Mental Health of Racine, Inc. and that of Crime Stoppers of Racine County, Inc. He also was appointed to serve on the City of Racine Board of Water Commissioners and the city’s Parks and Recreation Commission. He participated on budget review panels for Racine United Way. John was a longtime member and lector at St. Joseph Catholic Church.

John enjoyed playing tennis, softball, listening to Frank Sinatra and big band jazz music. More than anything he cherished time with his family, especially his granddaughters, who were a source of great joy to him.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Dennis (Olive) Swan; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Edward (Mona) Reiter.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, March 29, 2016, 11:00 A.M. St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1533 Erie Street, with Rev. Steve Varghese and Rev. Dennis Ackeret concelebrating.
