Age 47, passed away on April 12, 2014. He was born in Kalamazoo on January 11, 1967, the son of Roy Self and Patricia (Olson) Smits. Richard attended Mattawan High School. After graduating, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served his country with honor until being discharged. Richard had a strong personality; he was courageous and honest. Richard loved being on his motorcycle. He got his first bike when he was eight years old and never got off. He made many friends through his rides, and his spirit will always be with them. He loved playing golf with his father and enjoyed hockey. Richard also loved being outdoors and enjoyed hunting. He was a loyal Tigers and San Diego State University fan. He was a hard worker who was employed for more than 20 years at Graphic Packaging and was currently at Fast Track in Paw Paw. Many days he could be found helping his mother doing work around the family farm. He also had a passion for music and loved playing the guitar. Above all he loved his family and friends and leaves them with many happy memories. Richard leaves to cherish his memory his son, Aaron Self; his parents; siblings, Connie (Tom Cox) Self, Russell (Traci) Yurisich, Markus (Lisa Danielson) Smits; former wife, Carol (Castle) Self; a grandmother, Roberta Olson; a best friend, Bob Teske; many nieces, nephews and cousins. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life will be held on Friday, April 18, 2014, beginning at 5:00 with a time of fellowship to follow, at the Paw Paw Eagles Lodge #4310, 63237 M-40, Lawton, MI 49065. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the celebration. Private interment at Ft. Custer National Cemetery with full military honors.
