OBITUARY:
Ivan Compagner, age 84, of Holland, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, July 16, 2012.
He was born March 28, 1928, to John and Fannie Compagner in Oakland. He is survived by his wife, Beverly, who he married 60 years ago on July 2, 1952; his children, Dawn and Larry Geuder of HamilÂton, LeeAnn and Gary Was of Ann Arbor, and John and Lynae Compagner of Beaverdam; grandchildren, Mark and Jenny Geuder, Lori (Geuder) and Scott De-Visser (Isaac), Beth (GeudÂer) and Dan Vredevoogd (Samuel), Adam Was, Alex Was, Michael Compagner, Sara Compagner and Jacob Compagner; sisters, Luella and Almon Dekker, Arlene Yonker and Una and Karl Nykamp; in-laws, Polly and Glenn Stroven, Eleanor BoÂeve, and Jerry and Donna Boeve; and many nieces and nephews.
Ivan was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Henry and Edna Compagner, Sylvia and Sybrandt DeHoop, Wilma and Bernie Groenheide, Donna and Sylvan WasÂsink, Adrian Compagner, and an infant brother, JuÂnior Compagner; his inÂlaws, Garry Yonker and Bernard Hulst.
Ivan attended Hawthorne School and graduated from Zeeland High School in 1946 and Calvin College in 1950. He earned his masÂter’s degree from Western Michigan University.
Ivan was a teacher/prinÂcipal at Canada Hills school for one year and teacher/ principal at Hawthorne School for four years. He then moved to the Holland Public School system where he was a principal for 37 years. These included ApÂple Avenue Elementary, Lincoln Elementary and Lakewood Elementary.
He volunteered for 40 years at Tulip Time. For 20 years, Ivan was part of the Civil War Round Table and volunteered at the Holland Museum for 12 years. Ivan was on the Historical ComÂmittee for the Holland Fire House for three years. He hosted travel tours in the U.S. as well as internationÂally, Hawaii ( 2); Europe (5); Alaska (2); China (1). Ivan served as Church EduÂcation Director at MapleÂwood Reformed Church for fi ve years and as an elder and deacon there and at Christ Memorial Church. Ivan also volunteered for the Reformed Church in America Mission Field in Winnebago, NE.
A celebration of Ivan’s life will be at 2 p.m., Sunday, July 22, 2012, in the sancÂtuary at Christ Memorial Church, 595 Graafschap Road, Holland. Visitation will be Friday from 1-3 and 6- 9 p. m. at Langeland-Sterenberg Funeral Home, 315 East 16th Street, HolÂland. Private family comÂmittal services will be in Pilgrim Home Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be given to Hospice of Holland or Western TheoÂlogical Seminary.
