Brett Glomski

Brett Glomski was a truly special person, with a kind and generous soul. Brett unfailingly put others’ needs before his own, and acted with a maturity that belied his twenty-three years of age. His passion was to help others, and his dream to save lives. Brett made a special imprint on everyone he came into contact with, making many friends and touching many lives. Above all else, he created close and loving ties with the family he loved so deeply, and whom will forever treasure his memory.

Brett was born on February 26, 1989, in the picturesque town of Alpena, Michigan,. He was the first child of proud parents Steven and Susan (Beane) Glomski. From his earliest days, Brett proved to be a lively and inquisitive child, with a quick intelligence. His first words, spoken Christmas Day, were “Santa is great!” He was only nine months at the time, placing him well above the average in terms of development. A few years later, Brett was thrilled to become big brother to a new baby sister, Brooke. Brett was a devoted older brother, and always looked out for Brooke.

As a child, Brett was fascinated by nature – especially the creepy-crawly parts! He loved watching insects, snakes, and frogs, and looked forward to nature walks with his family. This early interest persisted throughout the years, and eventually led him to choose a career in the life sciences. In his free time, Brett enjoyed playing little league baseball, soccer, and going on fishing trips with his family.

The years went by, and Brett grew from a child into a teenager. Around this time, he discovered a love for hunting. He enjoyed the challenge of the hunt, as well as the quiet, reflective hours spent waiting for that perfect shot. When he was only thirteen years old, he shot his first whitetail buck. This was the first of many for Brett, and he amassed quite a collection of mounted heads. He also enjoyed turkey-hunting, a hobby he shared with his father. Over the years, he managed to shoot seven wild turkeys.

Brett was one of the lucky few to find true love early on in life. He met a beautiful young woman named Sarah Hemgesburg, and it wasn’t long before the two started dating. Although the couple were too young to think about getting married, Brett already knew in his heart that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with Sarah. Brett’s parents and sister got along well with Sarah, and were happy that Brett had found such a wonderful girlfriend.

Almost without knowing it, Brett had grown from a sweet little boy into an earnest and determined young man. He graduated from Alpena High School with honors in 2007, and was filled with dreams and plans for the future. His first step was to enroll at Alpena Community College, where he completed two years of coursework. He then transferred to Alma College, where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Science (Biology and Chemistry).

After graduation, Brett started working at North Eastern Michigan Community Mental Health Center, where he helped people who had disabilities in self-determination. He also tutored part-time at Alpena Community College, helping students master Biology, Chemistry, and Physiology. Kind and patient, Brett was a great tutor and counselor. He enjoyed communicating with people, and sincerely wanted to help them – people sensed this, and responded positively to his coaching.

Although Brett enjoyed his work, he had big ideas for the future. He wanted to become a transplant surgeon, which would have allowed him to help so many people. He was already studying for his MCATS, and planned to go to Michigan State University in the fall to get his master’s degree in physiology. After completing his master’s, he would go on to medical school. Brett was also looking forward to becoming an uncle in October of 2012.

Sadly, Brett never got the chance to save lives as a surgeon. One of his last decisions in this world, however, was to do what he could to help people, even after he was gone: he decided to become an organ donor, to give the gift of life to people who needed it the most.

Generous, kind-hearted, and loving, Brett was an amazing son, a devoted older brother, and a wonderful boyfriend. He is now in God’s hands, beyond pain and suffering. He will be deeply missed and forever loved by his many friends and family members.

Brett Trescott Glomski went to live in God’s presence forever on May 10, 2012, at the age of twenty-three. He is survived by his parents, Susan Beane of Florida and Steven Glomski of Alpena; his sister, Brooke Glomski of Alpena; his paternal grandparents, Alphonse and Rosemary Glomski of Alpena; his maternal step-grandfather; Fred Sustman of Palmetto, FL; his aunts and uncles, Sandy (Randy) Sucharski of Manton, MI, Sherry (Joe) Holsten of Braden, FL, Sally Galbraith of Coral Springs, FL, David (Evelyn) Glomski , Jeff (Kitty) Glomski, Alan (Jodi) Glomski, and Ken Glomski, all of Alpena, and Terry Glomski of Presque Isle; and his dogs, Breezie and Mercedes. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Jeannie Beane Sustman, and his maternal grandfather, Glen T. Beane.

Brett Glomski is at McWilliams Funeral Home – Alpena, where friends may call on Monday, May 14, from 2:00-8:00 p.m. They may also call on Tuesday, May 15, at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 a.m., with Fr.
