I have very fond memories of Ms. Bartoo. She was a wonderful teacher and had a heart as big as gold. Compasionate and a great sense of humor. She will be missed by many I am sure.

I read with a smile the "memory" the neighbor of Evelyn. My husband was friends with Evelyn as her realtor with the Mattawan home. She was an absolute delight. Recently I was trying to help Evelyn with housekeeping. I learned so much about her, her love of the teaching days, her love of flowers and mostly love of her animals. In Mattawan she bought a huse so her horse of 37 years had a special place. Her Jack Russell "Jackie" and the Irish setter "Sammy" were her constaant companions. The week before she died she voiced concern about what would happen to her furry friends, should something happen to her. I promised I would take Sammy, as my love of animals is nearly equad to hers. When she did not answer the door that Tuesday I knew something was wrong and it was my husband and I who found her. I kept my promise and took Sammy home that night. Her sister in BC came forward and wanted her, so sadly she is no longer with us. The memories of Evelyn however are still with us. We miss our friend.

Evelyn was a great person to have known. She loved to debate anything she had passion for. She will be sadly missed.

Gosh, I remember Evelyn when she was the principal of Spring Valley Elementary School. She was always a pleasant lady as I recall unless you got sent to the office for being naughty then she was all business. It was great knowing you and thank you for enjoying your job.

We live across the street from Evelyn; and our condolences go out to the family. While we are sorry for the loss; we enjoyed learning new things about her on LifeStory. A short time after Evelyn had moved in across the street, she drove up the driveway to visit our garage sale. When we saw her approaching, we took our 70lb. dog inside. Abby is a Black Lab Mix with a lot of enerygy. After Evelyn had introduced herself, she paused and looked around. Then she said "Sooo..can I meet that dog?" We cautioned her about Abby's energy but she was not concerned, it appeared that she had been admiring Abby from across the street. They equally enjoyed meeting each other, and became friends. A few days later there was a bag of dog treats on our back porch step, and a message on the phone that said they were for Abby. We soon referred to her as grandma Evelyn for Abby. This past year after getting an invisible fence, they didn't get as much face time as when we had the leash. There were a few ocassions where Abby would stop at the fence line with her whole body wriggling as Evelyn approached. I'd go to rush outside fearing a knock down. Before I could get the door open Evelyn had it under control, while Abby sat and wiggled and wagged safely by her side. I observed this a couple more times. Evelyn would be approaching our yard very slowly up a grassy hill while Abby waited at the fence line, wiggling and more excited with each step. Thankfully, no knockdowns. It was a pleasure to know you Evelyn! From Scott & Ken

I knew Evelyn Bartoo as a kind and patient teacher.

She also was a reading teacher in Kalamazoo Public

Schools. I remember her from Woods Lake Elementary

School when my 2 sons where students in 1980's.
