LIFESTORY:
Bernice ‘Betty’ Allegro, 72, of Kankakee passed away January 7, 2012 at Provena Heritage Village surrounded by her family, following her long fought battle with cancer. Her courage and tenacity for fighting this illness was an inspiration for all who knew her. She was born September 20, 1939 in Chicago Heights, IL to Mario and Annie (Fragale) Allegro. Betty attended St. Pats High School and graduated with the class of 1957. She worked for Kankakee Distributing Company for 35 years before moving on and working for Kankakee Memorial Gardens Cemetery where she retired from in 2001. She enjoyed nothing more than helping others and was involved in organizations such as: Easter Seals, Sons of Italy, her Del Phi sorority, as well as many other organizations in the area. Betty was a member of Maternity BVM Catholic Church. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading and spending time with friends and family.
Ms. Allegro is survived by her 4 siblings: Carlo (Clarice) Allegro of Bourbonnais, Carmella (Gary) Klepk of Virginia Beach, VA, Mary (Jim) Dykes of Ashburn, VA and Mike (Keli) Allegro of Bourbonnais. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents.
A gathering time for family and friends will be Wednesday, January 11, 2012 from 4-8 p.m. at the Kankakee Chapel of the Schreffler Life Story Funeral Homes with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service performed by the Sons of Italy. Betty’s celebration of life funeral mass will be Thursday, January 12, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Maternity BVM Catholic Church in Bourbonnais. Burial will immediately follow at Mound Grove Cemetery in Kankakee.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the family’s wishes would be appreciated.
