Life Story / Obituary
Rosamond Carter lived in Monrovia, Indiana all of her life. It is the place she called home, and the place where she created a lifetime full of memories with her family and friends. She valued her community so much and was an immense asset to the school district, not only as an employee but also as an unwavering supporter. Most importantly, Rose was a loving mother, proud grandmother and adoring great grandmother to the people who brought her life immeasurable joy.
The year was 1924 and Calvin Coolidge had assumed the presidency after the death of President Harding. Prohibition laws were creating legends out of gangsters and bootleggers and J. Edgar Hoover became head of the FBI, while the Charleston dance craze set the tempo for what would come to be known as the Roaring 20s. On January 3, 1924, in Morgan County, Indiana, Rosamond Dillon was born to proud parents, Lane Fuson and Inez (McCracken) Dillon. Rose, as she was called, enjoyed a typical childhood of the time, growing up in Monrovia with her two brothers, Jack and Fred, and sister, Kay. She received her education in the area schools, and graduated from Monrovia High with the class of 1941.
Rose was always a hard worker and worked in various places within and around the community. For a time, she worked at Diamond Chain in Indianapolis, Miller’s Merry Manor nursing home and Sunshine Park in Mooresville. Eventually, Rose returned to her alma mater, Monrovia High School, and worked here for over 27 years in many different positions. She was a substitute and study hall teacher, office aide, ticket person at games and janitor. Rose also served as a member of the Monroe-Gregg Board of Trustees. After school hours, she was a huge supporter of the high school basketball team, and rarely did she miss a game. She sat in the same chair in the same place at the entrance of the gym for every game. It was said that Rose will forever be a legend at Monrovia High School as she volunteered so much of her time, effort and support.
Aside from the school, Rose was a long established figure in her community too. Everyone knew that Rosamond Carter lived right in town on Chestnut Street, was a member of the Monrovia Eastern Star, and that she was a die hard IU basketball fan. Moreover, Rose was the “biggest fan” of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was blessed to have her two children, Rocky and Roxann, live close to her. Rose was so very happy to recently meet her newest great granddaughter, Laney Jo, who added yet another blessing to her life.
Rose was one of those “no nonsense” ladies, who did things her own way. Her stubborn streak often surfaced when she didn’t want to cooperate. She definitely did as she pleased. Yet, those close to her knew how much they meant to her, if not by her words, then by her actions of love and devotion. An extraordinary woman, Rose was the “wittiest, one of a kind, tell you like it is lady ever known!” She will be dearly missed by many.
