Just got an email from Cam Dingwall, our class of 2002 president, letting us know that our 10-year class reunion is closing in. I couldn't help but think of Sky and throw a google search out there...and this website is still active. It brings a tear to my eye even now remembering when I heard the news while in college at WMU and trying to go out to a party that night and act normal. I ended up leaving in tears with Josh Dufon, and we spent the rest of the night talking about all of the memories we had with Skyler though hockey and school. I miss you buddy.

Hey sky, once again I was just thinking about you. I lost my grandfather last month and I make sure I write on his lifestory as much as possible. Its almost like I can write emails to you guys, its just they dont get answered you know. I would give anything to have one more day with my grandpa, and I know your family feels the same about you. Its a beautiful day today, and Ben went golfing with Cal. Ben beat him pretty bad, but they had a good time hangin out tho. I know they both wish you could have been on that golf course causing a raucous too!!! I know your watching over everyone, but keep a close eye on your mom. She needs all the love she can possibly get right now. Talk about almost losing everything you love. She is a strong woman, and a wonderful person. I just know she needs you and Cal here for her now, and since you cant be here in body, be here in spirit. But I will leave this as I leave my grandfathers always, we miss you bunches and love you more. Come and see us in our dreams skyler.

Hey Sky, Its been almost two years since you left us. But yet I still think about you everyday. You were very important to everyone in your family, especially Ben. He misses you a lot. But he is taken care of your little brother for you. You have such a wonderful mother, father and brother. You were truly blessed, as were they. I still pray for your family everyday, and cant imagine the void they must feel in their lives. So keep an eye on your family, especially your mom. She loves you so. Make sure they are safe until its time to meet with them again.
Love always,

Ok, so its been a whole year since you've gone. It's hard to believe its been that long. We both miss you dearly. We try to get out to see you as often as possible. Ben hopes you liked the lilly and the birthday candles we left for you. He made sure he got the most manly plant he could find at the store so you would be proud of him. I know I didnt know you that well but I can honestly say I wish I had more of an opportunity. Im just glad I got to hang out with you at wings stadium a couple of times. How crazy is it that you ended up being my boyfriends cousin. Theres not a day that goes by that we dont think about you or talk about you. Ben has your senior picture in his car, right above his head. Like and angel, so keep an eye on him for me. Make sure hes safe. My heart aches for you mom, dad and cal. How awful to have someone so amazing in your life for 21 years and then suddenly taken away. I only knew you a short while, but every minute of knowing you made my life a little brighter. We miss your beautiful smile and gorgeous hair! We will all see you soon, we just wish you could have stayed here with us longer. You've made such an impression on so many peoples lives...You couldnt possibly imagine just how many. Sometimes just your smile was enough to brighten the day. We miss you lots skyler, and cant wait to see you again someday.

From our family service:
Dear Skyler,
Someday I know I will see you in heaven again and we will all be wondering why we lived so long, because we will find out how heaven is such a beautiful place. What can I say other than I always looked up to you as a great cousin. I can remember thinking I want to be like my cousin Skyler and thinking how great it would be to marry a man who was as kind hearted, respectful and of course had those looks!! I can't remember any moments with you that were not filled with some form of happiness. It seemed like you never had anything but a smile on your face. I find it truly amazing that you had so many great years filled with so many memories, everyone loved you for being a great athlete, cousin, brother, son, boyfriend, grandson, nephew, student and above all friend. You listesned to the problems of those around you and took the time to tell them your thoughts and memories. I loved how out of all of my cousins I could always trust you to be there for me and always on time to an event. Like when you came to a few of my horse back riding lessons. It may have seemed like a little deed to you, but to me it seemed so special. I felt gifted to have this awesome cousin who would take time out of his busy schedule to come watch me ride. I also loved how you came to my little brother's soccer and hockey games and would cheer him on, you were like his big brother and role model also, and I don't think you realized how much we really did love you. Can I also tell you that I loved your fashion choices, man were you well dressed and groomed. I loved your different hair styles (the blonde highlights) and also those plaid pants were sweeet! I remember working in Jeff's office with you, and each day you would come in with a new outfit and hair style. I also remember watching MTV for the first time with you and making fun of all of the posers, I just wish we could have spent more time together and in the future I know we will again. Thanks for being so spectacular over the years, I just want to tell you again how much I love you and miss you! I can't wait to see you again someday and until I do, I will always be thinking of you and how you have made such a great impact on my life and all of our lives. Skyler you'll be in my HEART forever and always! See you again someday from now

When Skyler was a baby, I remember a bunch of us sitting in a circle and passing him around. It was his first Christmas and we couldn't wait for our turn to hold the bubbly, smiley baby. Skyler was so full of joy and he spread it to everyone with his happy baby gurgles.
Fast forward almost 20 years to the big 2003 Baker reunion in Saugatuck. Cousins were meeting second and third cousins - everyone was having fun together. Suddenly we heard "Skyler's here!! Skyler's here!!". All his younger cousins, first, second and third, ran to greet him. It was the same boy - full of joy and spreading it to everyone - the star cousin they all looked up to.
Our hearts go out to Tim, Sue and Cal, Jayne and Hank, and Mary, all his aunts, uncles and cousins, his second and third cousins and his many friends. We will never forget the happy, gurgly baby who grew into such a kind, polite, handsome and wonderful young man.
much love,
(second) cousin Betsy and family

It's really difficult to come up with our fondest memory of Sky, we had so many of them. He was a part of our family when he lived in Springfield, eating supper with us several nights a week enjoying every single thing we put in front of him and some things he just naturally helped himself to. We enjoyed a quick ride down to St. Louis one school night to get new skates stopping on the way home for "supper" - we also watched many movies, etc. here at the house. One of our very favorite times shared was when he was doing a project at school on a trip to Austrailia, man we sure had some fun then, what a hilarious story he crafted. But I must say, the absolute best memory I have of Sky is when I told him I loved him, he repeated, "I love you too Tone!" You see, that's what he always called me, Tone, he called Dave - Big Dave, because he is! I'll be missing him more than I could ever express. Toni and Dave.

Our fondest memories of Skyler are during the time when the boys were in upper elementary, middle school and early high school years together. For Carol...watching an ever changing band of 10 year-old, ragtag, hockey devotees clearing their "spot" for hours on Eagle Lake to play "just one more game of pond hockey" before the nets sank into the bottom of the lake! For Dwayne ... escorting,"watering/feeding" and watching these boys (5-6players) play roller hockey at the "Strawberry Cup" every summer. They beat the pants off all the other teams entering for 3 years in a row! For Adam ...joining the AAA hockey ranks with the friendship and guidance of a supportive and loving hockey family and teammate who unselfishly taught him much about playing the "offensive" defense position with him on the blue line. We too will think of Skyler with the weather changes of nature...in winter, we will watch for the boys on the lake clearing the ice and in the summer, when strawberries are at their peak, we will remember you Skyler smiling back at us with that "what's up mysleeve? grin"...at the Strawberry Festival. Love, Mrs C, D-Wayne & Chandler14
"I thank my God for every remembrance of you"...taken from Paul's letter to the Philippians Chapter1:verse#3.

So many memories I have of Skyler. Memories that bring a smile to counter the tears. Memories that suddenly cause a chuckle when the sadness becomes overwhelming. Memories of car rides to hockey games (late and lost on icy roads), festive hotel rooms, and everlasting friendships. Memories of watching Skyler block a shot or race down the ice full throttle with the puck when he spotted a scoring opportunity.
However, my favorite memory of Skyler does not involve hockey. It was one of those perfect days in early fall when the sun still comforts and pockets of gold are beginning to overtake the greens of summer. Skyler, Ryan Diss, Mike O'Connor, and my sons Brendan and Dustin were going salmon fishing in a creek not far from our house. Instead of the hockey equipment I was use to seeing the boys wear, they were dressed in waders, and they carried fishing gear instead of hockey bags. Although, I was rooting for the fish, I couldn't help but be caught up in their excitement. It was so much fun being a silent observer of their male camaraderie. I remember Skyler seemed so happy as he prepared for this outdoor adventure with his buddies. He looked so natural and content in those waders. Skyler treasured his time with friends, and was at home in nature. I cherish the memory I have of seeing Sky's joy when friends and nature connected.

Skyler will forever be frozen in time at the age of 3 in my memory. That was his age when he attended preschool at Texas Corners Child Care and Angie and I were his teachers. After all these years I can still see those flashing dark eyes and that adorable, lovable smile! He was the youngest in the group but there was no babying Skyler! He was a mixture of rough and tumble and sweetness and innocence. I have pictures of him dressed as He-Man, complete with sword and shield. And then there he is singing in the Christmas play, holding his flag the highest in the St Patricks Day picture, and playing on the playground, enjoying himself and laughing with everyone else. I remember him wearing a sweatshirt just covered with all different kinds of buttons. He was so proud because his grandma had sewed those on for him.
Angie and I were so blessed to share that year with him. Memories like these are to be treasured forever. And after reading Skylers life story, it is apparent that Skyler left treasured memories for everyone that came into contact with him. And our prayer for all that he left behind is that the same Jesus that Skyler used to sit and listen to stories of day after day, hold you close and comfort you and carry you though as only He can.

For a greater purpose
That soon we too will know

We can only imagine
We can only believe

I remember Skyler from my son Derek's hockey team years ago. One thing that stands out was when he scored his first goal! We were all so excited for him! What a big moment in a little boys life! His brother Cal would sit with my daughter Kendall in the bleachers and talk and play during all of those hours we spent at the rink. Our heart goes out to the entire family! May God keep you in his arms and help heal the terrible pain you are feeling! Deb, Dennis, Derek and Kendall Christensen

I knew Skyler since we were little kids. I remember going to his birthday party when we were real young probably 7 or 8 and just having a blast. I wasnt the most popular kid in school but Skyler didn't care, he invited me anyway. I went to his party and we had a great time, playing in the yard and just being kids. Sky was a people person and was one of those kids who got along with everyone. I remember when he came back to Mattawan he was so happy and said hi to everyone in the hallways even if he didnt know you. Everyone knew sky because of hockey and loved him for it. He was one of the most hard working kids I have ever seem come out of Mattawan and he would have gone far in life. I will miss him and my prayers go out to his family. He will be missed dearly and never forgotten.

Skyler's dad, Tim, comes in for lunch almost everyday at the restaurant I work at (Ted & Marie's). The first time he came in for lunch with his dad, I asked him his name and thought how unique it was. He was very polite, handsome and definitely had a great smile. He must've gotten that curly head of hair from his dad! I found out today at work that he had been in a tragic motorcyle accident and my heart goes out to his family for having to experience such a deep loss. Even though I only met him a couple of times, I too, could see the zest and love for life he had. We sometimes don't understand why such tragic things happen, but we have to trust that God will give us the strength to carry on. Tim- I'm so sorry for the loss of your young son, my heart, thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Always remember the LOVE.
Sincerely,
Kenda Baker (waitress at Ted&Marie's)

We are all so shocked. We were out of town for the weekend and just found out. My deepest sympathy to Tim, Sue and Cal. It's been a while since we hung around together, but the fondness is still there. There were so many good times in hockey when the boys were small. I remember Skyler going full blast down the ice. He and Jake were good friends. We still have his name on our wall of friends in our basement that he wrote when the team was over so many years ago. I can't imagine what you must be going through. Just please know that we are praying for you and your entire family.

In reading Skylers life story, it begins by saying that Skyler was a young man who wouldnt be held back by anything for long, That was indeed one of my first impressions of Skyler. By boy Zack was the same age as Skyler and also played hockey. The group of boys born in 1984 were just coming of age to join travel hockey and I undertook the job of managing that team.
In preparing for the upcoming travel season, I remember scouting the house leagues and it was then that I first noticed Skylers hockey skills. I made sure that Tim and Sue brought him to the tryouts. That year for some reason, he did not make the team and I remember how disappointed he was. But unlike many who would have given up at that point, Skyler worked even harder during the next year to assure himself a spot on the team at the next tryouts. Coming back that next year to make that travel team was particularly difficult since he was not competing at the travel level and had to work extra had to break into the existing lineup.
That team, with Skyler's help, went on to win the prestigious Silversticks Regional Championships and the State Regionals, earning them a trip to the state finals. That core group of Kalamazoo area kids, including Skyler, went on to form the core of what is still considered to have been one of the best ever West Michigan Warrior AAA teams.

Skyler... From the moment I held you in my arms on June 5th, 21 short years ago, you have held such a special place in my heart. With your infectious smile and your incredible zest for life you have touched so many lives. I have so many special memories of you throughout the years. From Easter egg hunts, to hockey games, to watching you hold both Claire and Steven in your arms on the days that they were born. You have given all of us so many incredible memories to cherish and hold on to. You will forever be in my heart Sky. I love you so much.

I remember Skyler when we were little kids. I would go to their house on Crooked Lake and while our moms talked we would go swimming in the lake and play around the house. Then as we grew older I remember watching some of his hockey games at Wings Stadium. He was a great hockey player. Skyler was such an amazing person and will never be forgotten. My prayers go out to his family.

I have so many great things to remember Skyler by. He was an amazing guy. He always had such a big heart and was always smiling. Sky was a person you could count on for anything. One great memory I have was on our senior trip. We were standing in line for a ride joking around with eachother and Sky started to make fun of my pants. I had them rolled up and he told me that the 80's called and they wanted my pants back. Everyone was laughing so hard...but the funniest part was Sky was laughing the hardest by far. It was something I will NEVER forget. It seems so unfair that he was taken because he was such a good person. He will be missed very much. I am truly thinking of his family during this time. They are in my thoughts and prayers. I will miss Skyler so much!!!!!!!
Love always, Jen Buell

I don't know where to begin or what to say to make things easier. One thing I do know is that Sky was definitely one of a kind and there will never be another person like him. I think the funniest thing about Sky was his laugh, it was contagious; and that smile. (and that head of hair) A funny memory comes to mind about Sky. Senior trip we waited in line for like 3 hours to ride the millenium. Finally get up there, in & buckled. I was scared & asked Sky if he wanted to get out & he said Yeah! It was too late; but we were dying laughing because we were both scared. I'll always think of Sky with his head cocked in the air like "what up-I'm Sky Viss" We will all miss him EVERYDAY. Sue, Tim & Cal; I can't express my sympathy for you & your loss. I am so sorry this happened; I'll do anything I can to help

We have fond memories of camping at South Haven with Skyler when he was a young boy and his aunt Kay. we enjoyed simple yet awesome things together including the beach, lake, hotdogs on a stick over the campfire, sunsets and sitting in the trees. At sunset Kay always prayed"thank you God for a wonderful day". Today we pray "Thank you God for the gift of Skyler in our lives--young boy and young man."

Skyler...so many things I will miss about you. I remember when I first met you my sophmore year at Mattawan. Always a fun kid to be around...entertainment to say the least. I dont think you had any enimies unless you were on the Ice. Such a wonderful hockey player...never scared to take a hit...I Remember when Kurt Ellis (i think it was kurt)Put honey in that afro of yours...when you woke up you were so pissed, it must have took weeks to get that out. There are so many things I could say about you Sky
I just wish you were around to hear them. But I know that God has sent his angels for you. I can only imagine what you might be doing at this very minute. I am so sad I will never forget you Skyler. Memories will never die. Cal I am so sorry for the loss I cant stop thinking about how hard this must be for you and your family. I cried all day thinking about it. If you need someone to talk to, you have my number. Skyler loves you Cal he would want you to be strong right now...I'm so sorry If i had one of those magic lamps with a gene inside I would wish for your brother.

To speak of that which we do not now know
We can only imagine
A precious life
Taken from our cupped hands
For a greater purpose
That soon we too will know
The reflection of life born from the clear water of faith
We can only imagine
We can only believe
Safe journey gentle soul
Safe rest

He will be missed dearly and never forgotten.
sincerely,
