ZERFAS - Monsignor Herman H. Zerfas was born August 24, 1921 in Dorr, Michigan the son of John and Clara (Weber) Zerfas. Monsignor Zerfas attended Burnips and Allegan Public Schools; St. Mary's, New Salem and St. Patrick, Portland followed by Sacred Heart Seminary; St. Joseph Seminary and St. Mary's Seminary. He was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Grand Rapids on May 31, 1947, by Most Reverend Francis J. Haas, in the Cathedral of St. Andrew, Grand Rapids. Following his ordination Monsignor Zerfas served in numerous parishes in the dioceses as an assistant and as a pastor including St. Sebastian, Byron Center, St. Pius X, Grandville and St. Joseph, Wright. In addition he held various diocesan positions in education and he served a short time with the Michigan Catholic Conference as executive director. Monsignor retired in 1988. Surviving are his sisters and brothers, Sr. Claudette Zerfas, CSJ of Nazareth, MI, Gerald (Betty) Zerfas of Florida, Bernice (Donald) Sibal of Ondiana, Dolores (Bruce) Douglas of Florida and Ronald (Joan) Zerfas of Lansing; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Clara and John Zerfas. Visitation for Monsignor Zerfas will be on Thursday, December 9, 2010 at St. Ann's Home Chapel, 2161 Leonard St. NW from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., with a Vigil Service Thursday at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be con-celebrated on Friday, December 10, 2010, 11:00 a.m. at St. Ann's Home Chapel, Bishop Walter Hurley, principal celebrant.
