Died February 17, 2005. Richard was born April 17, 1921 in Chicago, IL, the son of Ernest and Bessie McGinnis, and had lived in Kalamazoo since 1940. He served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theatre, where he was awarded a bronze star during World War II. He was employed at DeNooyers Chevrolet for 17 1/2 years and at the Upjohn Company for 19 1/2 years until his retirement. Richard was a member of the Allen Chapel, A.M.E. Church. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gladys in 1993; and by 2 brothers, Ernest and Joseph; a sister, Irene Richardson; and infant brother and sister, Leonard and Josephine McGinnis. On March 22, 1998, he was married to Frances Stafford-Cross, who survives. Also surviving are 2 daughters, Judith Cain and Sandra Lewis, both of Kalamazoo; former son-in-law Ed Cain of Kalamazoo; step-children, Luanne (Clifford) Williams of Kalamazoo, Kenneth (Bonnie) Cross of Paw Paw, Derotha Burton of Pinole, CA, Wanda Cross of South Bend, IN, Celia Cross, Felecia (Gerald) Ware, all of Kalamazoo, Jolane Cross of Danville, IL; 4 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; 30 step-grandchildren; 22 step-great grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Mattie Pearson, Ernestine (George) Wysinger, Excell (Evelyn) McGinnis and Pearl Mosby, all of Benton Harbor, George Russell (Janice) McGinnis of Thousand Oaks, CA, Bessie (Robert) Caston of Kalamazoo, Bertha (James) Herring of Chicago, and Samuel (Mattie) McGinnis of Abbeville, LA; brother-in-law, Ronald Richardson; sister-in-law, Glorydean McGinnis; and a former sister-in-law, Opal McGinnis, all of Kalamazoo; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Services will be held at 11:00 o'clock Wednesday at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick St. with the Rev. Jerry W. McNeely of the Allen Chapel, A.M.E. Church, officiating. Interment with military honors by the Comstock V.F.W. Post #6252 in Riverside Cemetery. Friends may meet the family on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the chapel.
