OBITUARY:

HEMPSTEAD - Jill G. Hempstead, aged 65, of Cascade, passed away Wednesday, March 17, 2010. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Carolyn Griffendorf. She is survived by her husband, Joe Hempstead; daughter, Kim Hempstead of Boulder, CO; son, Greg (Sarah) of Indianapolis, IN; granddaughters, Norah and Caitlyn Hempstead; sisters-in-law, Sally Hempstead and Mary Hempstead of Elkhart, IN. A Michigan State graduate, Jill taught in the Trenton, Michigan schools and served as a teacher's aide in Wyoming Public Schools for several years. She was a wonderful mother to her two children and a homemaker through their formative years. After moving to East Grand Rapids, she was active in the PTA and various school related committees and projects forming friendships that have endured and grown over the years. Once an empty nester, she worked as a receptionist at the Spectrum Health Child Development Center's Lake Drive location again forming many lasting friendships. She will be remembered for her warm smile, intelligence, excellent taste in food, great cooking and loving attention to her family. Funeral services will be Sunday 2:00 p.m. at the Frederik Meijer Gardens, 1000 E. Beltline NE, Rev. Richard Rhem, officiating. Visitation Saturday 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the O'Brien-Eggebeen-Gerst Chapel, 3980 Cascade Rd SE. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Charity of One's Choice.
