The light in the world burns a little dimmer. I can not tell you how my heart aches for you. I love to sit wth you and Ray and have drinks and just laugh. I always looked forward to seeing Ray's big smile and waiting to find out what my new summer nick name would be. I love you both dearly and you always made summer magic for me every summer.

Craig and I will miss Ray dearly as he was a unique human being and one half of the dynamic duo running the Kirby House. He was usually the first person to jump in the pool when we opened it and usually had the last swim when we closed it.
Jim you are in thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Jim,
I cant tell you how shocked I am to hear of Ray's passing. I remember the good time that myself and friends have shared pool side, in the kitchen and dining room that you both made possible with great hospitality, gourmet food and great senses of humor. You know you were liked by Ray if you had the privilige of his beautiful smile and timely jabs.
My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

Jim,
Who knew the significance of our last visit and spending time with you and Ray. We are both selfishly grateful for the time spent at the Kirby House, always feeling the warmth of family with you both. We hope "Buddy" was a quiet comfort and that you find the perfect opportunity to one day pay him forward. How awesome to know the depth of love and support you have from those around you during such a tough, tough time. We love you and will treasure the memories of Ray.

Oh Raymond, my baby brother. I can't believe you're gone. I was just there with you at the Kirby House last week and we had the most wonderful visit I could ever have imagined. God must have sent me there knowing he was going to take you to be with Him soon. I feel so blessed to have spent some of your last days with you.
I was 13 years old when Raymond was born. About that time I had stopped playing with dolls, but now I had a real baby doll to take care of and would take him for walka in the buggy whenever I could over to my friends' houses down the street. When I had my first little one, he used to love to watch Uncle Raymond marching and tossing his rifle high in the air, never missing it. One day while walking in the toy isle at K-Mart I turned around just in time to see him marching proudly and throwing a toy rifle as high as he could. Needless to say, he didn't catch it like his Uncle Raymond always did. We moved to Tennessee about 25 years ago and although we didn't get to see each other often, Raymond came here on many occasions and he always loved it when we came there, always putting out the red carpet and making us feel so special. And every once in a while he would be feeling nostalgic and call "just to chat"
I've been going through many pictures of him through the years to make a memory board to bring to the funeral and there wasn't a single one that didn't have his beautiful big smile.
I love you Raymond and will miss you forever. Mom and Dad would be so proud of you and all you have accomplished and now you're in heaven with them and Mark.

I am deeply saddened to learn of Raymond's death. My heart goes out to Jim, Kathleen & family, Susie & family, Marguerite & family and of course to two of my best friends, Mary Ellen & Scott & family and my dear childhood friend Grace Anne & family. Ray was like the little brother I never had growing up. I think I spent more time at the Riker house than I did my own !
I am pleased that in 2000, on my birthday, my husband Dave & I stopped in at the Kirby House. I was able to visit with Ray and he took us on a tour of the house.
May he rest in peace.

Brett and I have spent some 23 Labor Day weekends at the Kirby House. We first met Ray and Jim, of course, when they bought the place. And we will always think of you both as the people who saved the first place that Brett and I discovered together as a couple.
But Ray was, of course, so much more than that. Quick with a quip, the perfect cocktail host(ess), and one of the best cooks we have ever known! And a friend. Not everyone we visit on a commercial basis had that place in our hearts, but you two always have. I can't imagine not seeing his smile, hearing his laugh, or wincing at one of his well-aimed zingers again.
We were privileged to know him and share his boundless hospitality. Our hearts have a hole in them. God bless you, Ray, and of course, peace and comfort to you, Jim, and to your entire, extended family.
With love and grief,
Doug & Brett

Ray saved me from my 2nd and Seldon apt.! We were roommates for 2+ years and co-workers for 6 years at the Money Tree.
We have been friends for eternity.
We attended Unity and spiritual classes together- and then we'd go dancing at Menjos! (Well they were around the corner from each other). A pretty well rounded life I would say!
I'll remember Christmas music in July, Ella sings Cole Porter and Beethoven!!!!
I'm so grateful that Ray was able to spend the last 15 years with his loving partner doing what he always dreamed of doing... He lived all his dreams.
Thank you Jim for loving him so ultimately. Light and Love to you for all you've given to our friend!

Unbelievable news. One of Ray's gazillion cousins, it would be easy to understand that I didn't know him very well, but it's one of those times when you would say, "I wish I did." What I do know is how proud his siblings all were of him, the baby of the family. They shared his accomplishments and accolades so happily and I knew that one day I'd make it to that bed & breakfast. Wouldn't you know, just over a year ago we were 'in the area' and just popped in - rather late. Jim, I thank you, I believe you probably woke Ray up to visit for a little bit, and I'm so glad you did. Just another memory to give us a little smile.

Wow. What a sad, sad loss for all of us. Ray had such a huge giving heart. He made each one of us feel like a part of his family each and every time we visited. I always felt like he was waiting to see and genuinely happy I was there. I looked forward to seeing his smiling face every trip greeting me with a warm "Welcome home" and a big hug. Ray, I will cherish the memories of many New Year's Eves after the service, singing your favorite showtunes with you and coaxing Jim into Carol Channing just to annoy you. Ha! Jim my thoughts and love are with you. Words cannot express how my heart goes out to you. Just know how very special your life together was and how much others would give to have a moment of the life you shared. Your bond was, and is, indeed very special. Ray, you will be missed by many. You were a prince among men.

I may be one of the few people that knew you you pre-Ray and still remember the stories of you walking past his house in East Pointe trying to get his attention. Well once you got his attention you never lost it. Whenever I spent time around the two of you it was evident that your relationship was built on four things, love, laughter and family and friends. Oh, and an occasional cocktail. You always said the recycling guy would stand in amazement when he opened your container.

I'll never forget all the songs he made up in the back of the bus that we would all sing! I think it was his idea to pretend we had gotten off the bus early one Sunday morning but we were all actually hiding on the bus. Just a small amount of trouble!! The Kirby House speaks for itself as a huge success in many ways of which you two brought to the community and influenced so many beautiful times. I am grateful for the opportunity to have shared this last New Years Eve. I would see Ray at the gym religiously doing the walk-around track between weight sets and casting his charming smile with a non-invasive gentle greeting as he passed by.
There are no words to offer other than I am so sorry for your loss, Jim. Know that Mike and I care very much and we are phone call away for anything you need, anytime.
Comforting heartfelt energies to you and your families,

Our thoughts and prayers are with Scott and his siblings and to all of those who loved Raymond. Raymond was such a kind hearted man who always seem so joyful. I aways seen a smile on his face. It has been many years since we had seen him but I have fond memories of him when he and Scott catered my first baby shower in 1985. The food was spectacular everyone raved about it and they had fun doing it. He had a passion for what he did. Although we never were able to get to see the B&B Scott always kept us informed at how well he was doing. Your loss will leave a great void in so many hearts. Allthough we cannot make it to the funeral home we will be thinking of all of you.

I know Ray from drum corps and I have so many memories, every one of them makes me laugh & I wish I could share them all. He was such a fun guy to be around. The most recent memory is when he came to our reunion, held under a pavillion at a park. Here comes Ray with this HUGE silver serving container fit for a queen, filled with his bean dip, & carrying sternos to warm the dip(this was a hot-dog & bean-type picnic!). Well...Ray lights the sternos & our fancy paper tablecloth goes up in flames. Can't you just hear him laughing? He ALWAYS made me laugh. I cherish so many memories made with Ray. I loved him, I will miss him and never, ever will I forget him...

I've "known" Ray for many years through Jim. I've known him to be a great guy, artist, host and partner to Jim. I am so fortunate to have been able to spend real time with Ray and Jim on my first Kirby House visit. Though I just met Ray for real, we had a blast. Ray was so genuine, gracious and funny. I laughed my head off that weekend! That was just what I needed too. Ray, you had a wonderful effect on others, inspiring us to love, live large and enjoy our blessings. When I think of you Ray, you will continue to inspire me in that way. Jim, you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Raymond and I spent alot of time together through the years...as brother and sister and as close friends. We had alot of interests and activities in common such as school plays, art, Drum and Bugle Corps.
One of my fondest memories was when we were in the Saganaires Drum and Bugle Corp. We had to drive to Saganaw (which was about a 2 1/2 hr drive) twice a week for practice. Ray was in High School and I was working full time as a medical assistant. I had a flat on the eastside of Detroit, and he would come over after school to make dinner so we could head out after work and make the evening practices. I would get home, expecting to have a grilled cheese or whip up a burger.
.....no......
you have to picture this: tablecloth, candles, even a "menu" written up....
hors d'oeuvres like shrimp scampi,
and dinner was Duck a l'orange!
That was my sweet brother---
creative, fun, and ever so thoughtful.
and yes....we still got to practice on time.

I have fond memories of first meeting you and Raymond on Amity almost 15 years ago. What a surprise to find out that one of the new neighbors was actually an expert and famous chef from Detroit and quite obviously a much better cook than I. Terrified as I walked to your home with a plate of my chocolate chip cookies, I thought it best if I turn right around and bring those silly old cookies home and hide them from the culinary master :) I did muster the courage to knock on the door and present my 'welcome to the neighborhood" plate of goodies. They were well received (imagine that) and thus began a friendhip and a friendly cookie exchange !
Jimmy my heart goes out to you at this most difficult of times. Not only have you lost your best friend and soul mate, but most importantly the man of your dreams, the one you shared your life with for so many years........Please know Raymond will always be with you in your spirit and in your heart.
I am so thankful you are surrounded by so many dear friends and family to help you at this time of need. What a blessing they are..........
Big Bear Hugs to you....................Andy.

We wish to extend our deepest sympathy to you, Jim, your family, and the entire Riker family on the passing of Raymond. We are longtime Lapeer friends of Ray's sister Kathleen and husband Dick Dinkle. A few years ago, upon hearing that you and Ray owned a beautiful bed and breakfast up North of us, we were excited to re-discover what we love most about Michigan, it's quaint towns, beautiful water, and especially its enchanting accommodations. We were not disappointed when we booked rooms at the Kirby House, met you and Ray and were treated so warmly and well. We shared with many friends our experiences of those few days in the Saugatuck-Douglas area and recommended your fine lodging
over and over. May the plethora of memories you and Ray made together and his beautiful spirit remain with you, sustain you and bring you enduring comfort.
Sincerely yours - Bernie and Carol Pariseau

As I think with everyone, I'm blown away with shock with the news of Ray's passing. I think it makes if more difficult to understand since he was so full of life.
I met Ray while working at Tribute, helped a little with him moving in to the Kirby House, as well as took advantage of he and Jim's warm hospitality at the Kirby House numerous times!
He had a large personality, great sense of humor, and genuine warmth for the people in his life. Ray clearly loved life.
Ray was always creating running jokes that everyone jumped on board with, like the word "laloo" (which meant "crazy" - used in a sentence; "That customer at Table 7 is BEYOND laloo"), creating my nickname "Camp Counselor" because of my education background, and pretending one night while working at Tribute that we were in the Titanic as it was going down (exclaiming "OK everyone, we just hit the iceberg" as he swayed back in forth in the lobby) - he even included his tables in the joke.
He and Jim made the perfect team in running a Bed and Breakfast. Ray was in his element there. I always looked forward to visiting them there, and loved hearing about their improvements and successes (as there are many) and histerical accounts of their life experiences. I greatly admired his relationship with Jim too - they had a fun banter and genuinely loved and enjoyed each other.
I've already written too much - I can imagine Ray jokingly stating; "shutttt....upppppp!" then laughing in his contagious way.
Big love to you Ray! Your positive energy is still with us!
- Carl

Jim,
We are so very sorry for your loss. Please know that we are thinking of you during this time.
Ray was generous of spirit, quick with a story, and always made us feel part of the Kirby House "family". I smile at the mere thought of him as I write this. He will be missed deeply.
He told us often that he was the luckiest man to have you in his life. Treasure that as the days and weeks ahead unfold.

I cannot comprehend this past week---- Last Monday, Margo & I were so thrilled that we could spend the night with you and then how quickly things went downhill!
Margo and I have know you and Ray for I don't know how many years, but we certainly have shared many good times together, even though Ray often told me I had to not take control. The special memories I have were the cooking classes, you two coming to Julia and Mike's shower and the crowning of all events was the "Steak Fry" in this past September. Jim, I know you are going to face many lonely periods and decisions, but we want you to come next weekend for the Fondue Party. If the weather is not suitable to drive, you can always take the train. You guys are very good and dear friends. You will need much of God's grace to get you through the rough times and may you know that you are in our prayers continuously.
Love,
Karlene

I have such wonderful memories of Ray. He was my color guard instructor at Dondero High School in Royal Oak from 1986 - 1990. He was always so upbeat and positive and had a smile on his face. He impacted my life in many ways and I will never forget how much fun we all had. I was happy to see that he followed his dreams and found a life partner to share them with. I'll never, ever forget you Ray. You'll always be in my heart.

Jim,
I cannot put into words how you are in my thoughts, heart and prayers. Know that you have people holding you up to make it through this tough time.
I still am shocked at how quickly we lost our Ray of sunshine. He was always in motion.
When i worked with him, in the days of "Money Tree" on Fort Street, downtown Detroit, he was a tornado of energy. Beyond funny, he was a force of entertainment. Guests would merely ask for pepper on their salad and get...Ray marching over with his pepper mill baton giving them a show WITH their salad.
At the restaurant, setting up the place became a stage. Everything was a baton! The plates, the napkins, anything not nailed down would be flown onto the table before guests arrived.
He will always be in constant motion; laughing; twirling a peppermill somewhere, in my memory.
Ray, you are still much loved and will always be remembered for the entertainer that you are.

All my memories of Ray bring a smile to my face. We shared many laughs and good times at St. Jude! My heart goes out to Jim and the whole Riker family. Our deepest condolences from the Gentry Family

I was so surprised to receive the announcement of Ray's death today from Sadie Sadowski in my facebook inbox. It has been about 20 years since I have seen Ray. The last two time just happened to be at events I attended that he was catering. What a wonderful caterer he was.
I first met Ray through Grace and the Blue Angels Drill Team. A love for all of us during high school at Regina! Ray went everywhere with us. He was a great kid who could handle a rifle better than Grace or Sadie (I'll be in trouble for that comment... but it is true). I have a great picture of him (still in grade school) being pushed into the pool at some hotel in his plaid bell bottom pants.
He was a wonderful guy and friend. He has touched my life many times. He was such a gift to all of us!

I have many great memories of times spent with Ray in Royal Oak @ the Dream Cruise parties and going to explore with Jimmy & Ray when they bought the condo in Saugatuck.....then came the Kirby House. Who would have thought a weekend of cleaning a huge victorian home could be so much fun! Ray always made me laugh until I could not laugh anymore. Ray will be missed so much, his kind heart and caring ways will always be a great memory for me.

He will certainly live on in our hearts forever.

Comforting heartfelt energies to you and your families,
~Todd

Jim,
We are so very sorry for your loss.
XO,

Since we have been in town, you and Ray were always kind and encouranging to us..."Hey", "How's it going?' Hows biz" always a smile and encouragement. We all share in your loss, Jim, and hope that memories and friends will fill a small part of the gap Ray has left. Peace be with you.

Jude! Although we lost touch for many years, I was so glad we reconnected a few years ago and picked up right where we left off...laughing. I was shocked to hear of Ray's passing!!!

Ray was a wonderful, bright, and loving man. He was a part of our family for over 20 years, and for that I am eternally grateful. He was a good friend to me and a caring uncle to my daughters. He was a loving and caring partner to my brother. I love him for that and the many other things he brought to our lives. We love you Ray, and will miss you enormously.
