I spent little time with Don, as a recent Grandfather of mine (by marriage) and as we lived in Arizona, I only spent a few occasions with him. However, Don reminded me so much of the wondeful countrymen of his generation. Men who have fought for our freedom, married thier sweethearts for a lifetime, worked steady and hard to provide for their loved ones, and enjoyed the company of their growing families in his elder years, joyously with his wife. Don and Nancy are the type of people who immediately warm your heart and you consider them family, because they remind you of how it feels to have real life Angels walk amoung us. The Lord and all of Heaven have received a wonderful man, a wonderful gift of a soul that is sure to continue to serve God and all of his family,...just from Heaven above.

Maple Rapids has a big hole in its heart now. Don was so much a part of what the town was. When you went down town to get your mail, you would usually see Don there visiting with the postmaster and he always had a smile and said hello.
One of my favorite memories was when I had just gotten my 125 Yamaha and was anxious to learn how to ride it. That first night Gary and I went riding with Don and Nancy and ended up riding in the hills of the gravel pit here in town. Being a novice, I had a hard time navigating the turns and hills at the same time and I remember when I stalled out while trying to go up a small, but steep to me, hill. All of this was in the dark. Don encouraged me to try again "and just gun it!" He failed to mention to "ungun it" and I ended up sailing in the air and landing on the other side of the knoll on the ground. Everyone came running to see if I was o.k. and found me crying. I can still hear Don chuckling when I said I was all right but I had put a dent in my gas tank. I ended up putting Contac flowers all over my gas tank and helmet to "camoflage" the dent. We also had fun riding snowmobiles together on the ice of the Maple River.
I think the whole town will cherish the memories we have of Don and the small part he had in our lives.

Maple Rapids has loss a true friend, but God has gain a saint.
I'll miss his wave,while driving.
I will miss talking to him at Q D in Fowler.
Don love to go too auctions,to see the smile on his face
when he would be high bidder on an aladden lamp.
Don was not a bird that would flock together, like sparrows.
He was an eagle that like to soar alone.
Happy flying DON.
See you on the other side.

Nancy do suppose Lyle and Don are up there in heaven trying to see who could get stuck in the snow first. Those two sure had fun playing together.

Though Uncle Don was my only uncle...he was my favorite uncle! :-) I remember all of those visits to Grandpa and Grandma's house, he was always there too. We had so much fun with him, and he cared for his nephews as much as his kids. He always took time to play with us, and made us laugh until we cried. And man, the stories he brought back from Alaska, were so exciting, it made us want to go. The times we talked about motorcycling, and the visits were always enjoyable. The fun at the cabin every deer season we went. I remember as a small kid, the time he chased me down in my sleeping bag, just to put peant butter on my nose ! I will miss Uncle Don, but the memories will be forever in my heart.
