Betty Jane Zalewski

ZALEWSKI - Betty Jane (Mentzer, Devereaux) Zalewski, having just celebrated her 85th birthday, passed away quietly, March 29th after a long illness. Betty grew up in Belmont, MI where she returned to raise her then three small children, upon becoming a Gold Star Wife at the death of first husband, Lt. Robert Mentzer of the 5th Air Force and also after the death of her daughter, Kathy. Betty became active in the community, the school, and the local cub scouts. Upon marrying Stanley Zalewski (deceased), she joined Assumption BVM, also in Belmont. She soon became the church secretary, cook and housekeeper for the parish and worked at the rectory for some years. In addition, Betty owned and operated a successful Drapery business for many more years to come. Betty is survived by her daughter, Beth Ann (Mentzer) Sutherland; her son, Jim Mentzer and wife, Kim; daughter, Mary (Mentzer) Degate and husband, Robert; daughter, Suzette Marie (Zalewski) Turner and husband, Aaron; by her grandchildren, Jennifer (Sutherland) Bronkhorst, Douglas Sutherland, Ryan Dengate, Lisa Mentzer, Stephanie Mentzer, Jonathon Mentzer, Phillip Turner and Miles Turner. Betty had five great-grandchildren. In keeping with her wishes cremation has taken place and a memorial will be held at a later date.
