When I was a student at Fremont High, back in the late 50's and very early 60's, one of my lasting memories is of Mr. Dejong's Geometry class - I sure struggled with the subject, but Mr. DeJong was very patient and always had a smile. Later, when my life turned to local politics I had no idea I would ever share the same seat on the City Council as did Mr. DeJong. He left the City of Fremont a much better place, just as I hope to do. He was a great teacher, a dedicated Councilmember and Mayor - and, a friend. My life is better having known him. Jim

To a great man, He was like a father to me, as well MS Rose as a mother. I know he is a better place now. I loved listening to him talk about the Marine Corps, and he loved telling me about it. God bless his soul.

I have many memories of Mr. DeJong from my junior and senior high school years in Fremont. Sandi and I were friends and often spent time at each other's homes. As chidren, parents were, well - parents and adding the fact he was also a teacher added to his mystic. He was there for us, often giving advice and instruction. Periodically, over the years I'd meet with Sandi at Rose & John's home when she returned to Michigan. As an adult, it was fun visiting with them and getting to know them as people rather than parents!
