Yvonne P. Cushman July 24, 1920 - February 12, 2008 "Cushie" died peacefully, February 12, 2008, at Tendercare of Portage. She was born July 24, 1920, the daughter of Harry and Zora (Butler) Cushman, and was a graduate of Kalamazoo Central High School. Yvonne was the first female city bus driver in Kalamazoo. An avid animal lover, she owned and showed Great Dane dogs. In the '50s Cush could be seen riding her Harley 74 Overhead, with her motor cycle "buddies." Yvonne owned a grocery store in Otsego, and lived a year in Montana. Yvonne retired from the State of Michigan, after working at Fort Custer State Home, and the Muskegon Regional Facility working with the mentally challenged. She loved Arizona and spent several winters there. Cush is survived by many special friends: she will be greatly missed by a special friend of fifty-four years, Portia Fagan, and special friend Jan O'Dell. According to her wishes, cremation has taken place, a memorial service will be conducted Saturday, February 16, 2008, 11:00 a.m., at Unity of Kalamazoo, 1204 Whites Road, Kalamazoo, the Rev. Marty Newman, officiating. Friends are encouraged to share memories at that time. Interment will take place in Mt. Home Cemetery. Memorial contributions to the Kalamazoo Gay/ Lesbian Resource Center or a charity of ones choice will be appreciated. Arrangements by: Williams-Gores Funeral Home, Delton.
