Michael "Mike" Ackerberg
Jul 27th 1952 - Jan 4th 2008
LIFESTORY:
Michael Ackerberg was born at a time when America was enjoying the peace and prosperity of post-WWII optimism. Growth in industry and jobs gave workers the opportunity to build homes and start families that launched the baby boom era. In Holland, Michigan, Melvin and Florence (LaBuy) Ackerberg were delighted to welcome their son Michael into their lives on July 27, 1952. He grew up in the serene town of Holland, along the shores of Lake Michigan, where he attended Harrington School and graduated from West Ottawa High School.
As a lifelong resident of Holland, Mike took advantage of the delights that the woods and waters of Michigan offer. He was a self proclaimed “Birder” and, as such, was excited to spot woodland birds on his excursions with DeGraff Nature Center and the Discovery Center in Holland. When he ventured to other beautiful regions of the country, his favorite destination was the Rocky Mountains.
Mike was a dedicated employee of I.H.S. in Holland for over 25 years. His faithfulness and dependability was notable in his family life as well. When his sister Linda and her children came to live with Mike, he received the children as his own. Like a father, Mike helped raise his nephews and nieces with care and attention, and they enjoyed the love and laughter of family togetherness. Mike was also blessed to have Providence Christian Reformed Church as his spiritual home.
As much of an outdoor enthusiast as he was, Mike found great contentment watching indoor sports. He was a huge fan of Michigan State University, and he took in many-a sports program to get the latest scores, particularly football and basketball. Mike’s fun-loving personality allowed him to take joy in sports, nature and people. All these were generous gifts of God, whom Mike knew and who knew and loved Mike.
Michael “Mike” Ackerberg, age 55 of Holland, died at his home on Friday, January 4, 2008. He was preceded in death by his niece, Tanya Hammond, in 2006. Surviving are his sister, Linda Hammond, of Holland; Nephews and niece Todd and Kathi Hammond, Allen and Kim Hammond, and Jennifer Hammond; Great nephews and niece, Kyle and Alec Hammond, and Kayleigh, Troy, and Tate Hammond. A memorial service is scheduled for Wednesday, 11:00 AM at Providence CRC. Officiating will be the Rev. Keith Doornbos. Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, 2-4, and 7-9 PM at the Mulder Chapel, Dysktra Life Story Funeral Homes, 188 W. 32nd Street. Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Church.
