With great sadness we received notice of Charlie's passing. What a wonderful family and experiences he had during his life.

Charlie and I were friends for many years wile we were growing up in Grand Haven. I especially remember when he and I studied Greek with Ardena Lear very early in the mornings during our Senior year in high school.

In the mid 90's Charlie found our daughter's email address on the Internet and they shared emails for a period of time. Then, we stopped in the bookstore to visit him during one of our annual family Coast Gurad trips.

Charlie was an amazing person and I know you all miss him very much. We send our thoughts and prayers to his family. Ron and Judie Elenbaas

I remember hearing the sweetest music in the world wafting from my father in-law's living room. It was him playing... Hauntingly beautiful music will forever remind me of Charlie.

I miss him dearly. It has been hard... his absence is keenly felt by many.

When Frank and I visited GH each summer we tried to make time to visit the Bookman and stop and talk to Chuck. He always had a special wonderful, dry, and witty joke for us. He was a year behind us at GHHS but he played the clarinet in the bank with Frank and his friends. We were most impressed with his obituary. Obviously, his friends and family truly loved and cared for him. Our sympathy to all of you. gaw

I came to Grand Haven in 1998. After working for a short time in the catering business, I learned that I would be working an event with a girl named Aimee and that I might know her from the Bookman as the girl with the fantastic long curly dark hair. Sure, I knew who she was--she was someone that I didn't know, but I felt that we should be friends. Well we did become good friends. We bought homes across the street from each other, even. I did not know Charlie very well, but every time I did come to the Bookman, he spoke to me as though we were good friends, and he was someone who was truly interested in me. Now, Grand Haven is truly my home, and it is because of fine people like Charlie and Aimee. Being at Charlie's memorial service was truly moving. He clearly touched many people and we all wish there would be more time with him.

Charlie was quick to introduce himself when we moved into our house on Lafayette and always made us laugh with his wit. We will miss hearing him play the clarinet. Peace.

I met a friend this morning, Saturday, for breakfast at Morning Star, and after planned to stop in to pick up a book....I was shocked and saddened to see the note on the door and realized how long it had been since I had stopped into the Bookman. I began thinking back on visits I had made there and all the wonderful help I received from Charlie trying to find a perfect book for someone ....I always loved his wit and was fortunate to attend some of the wonderful events that Charlie created for poetry readings and the like over the years....one weekend I even ran into Charlie and his wife at Pierce Stocking and remember this well.....He will be missed and my thoughts are with all of his family and friends...."charming" that is the word I used to describe Charlie.....peace to you....
